Eastpointe woman charged with animal torture moves toward trial

Macomb County authorities say 19-year-old Dezhiar Blair, of Eastpointe, has waived her preliminary exam and has been bound over to the Macomb County Circuit Court on a charge of Third-Degree Animal Torture after she allegedly kicked her mother’s dog in the head, causing it to lose an eye.

The charge is a 4-year felony and the maximum charge available under the law based upon the evidence presented to date.

Blair was scheduled for a Probable Cause Conference before Judge Kathleen G. Galen at the 38th District Court in Eastpointe last week. At that hearing, Blair waived her right to a Preliminary Exam and was bound over for trial.

Blair is scheduled to be arraigned before Judge James M. Biernat, Jr., in the Macomb County Circuit Court on March 23.

It is alleged that on Wednesday Feb. 25, Blair kicked her mother’s less than 5-pound Shipoo in the head. The dog was taken to a veterinarian who performed emergency surgery and had to remove one of the dog’s eyes.

Blair remains in the Macomb County Jail with a $50,000 cash/surety bond. If she is able to post bond, she was ordered to have no contact with or possession of any animals.
