Justices head to Bay City for ‘Court Community Connections’ program

As part of its “Court Community Connections” program, the Michigan Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in People v. Jennings, No. 165764, at Bay City Central High School beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, at the Bay City Central High School, 1624 Columbus Avenue in Bay City.

In the days leading up to the event, students will participate in a pre-argument briefing provided by local attorneys. Michigan Supreme Court Commissioners will also offer an additional pre-argument briefing for those who may not have had the opportunity to host a local attorney visit. This will be followed by oral argument and a post-argument debrief led by the Michigan Supreme Court chief operating officer.

The program will also include a question-and-answer session with the attorneys. After the hearing, students will have the opportunity to meet the Justices and take photos at a reception.

“Court Community Connections” is one of the Michigan Supreme Court’s longest-standing public education and engagement initiatives. Since its launch in 2007, the program has provided students with a firsthand opportunity to observe the judicial process and engage directly with the court. In addition to hearing cases at the Michigan Hall of Justice in Lansing, the court travels to communities statewide through this program, which is aimed primarily at high school students. This will be the 33rd time the court has convened in a community setting to hear a case at another location.

Along with Michigan Supreme Court justices and Bay County judges, students from the following schools will be participating in the 33rd “Court Community Connections” program:

• Bay City Central High School
• Bay City Western High School
• Bay City Eastern High School
• All Saints Catholic High School
• Essexville Garber High School
• John Glenn High School
• Standish/Sterling High School
• Pinconning High School
• State Street Academy High School
• Bay-Arenac Community High School
• Bay City Academy High School
• Au Gres-Sims High School
• Local area nonpublic schools

Online streaming of oral arguments and other hearings will begin shortly before hearings begin. Streaming will begin only when the Court is in session and on the bench.
