Wayne Law continues remarkable rise in latest U.S. News & World Report rankings

Wayne State University Law School continues its steady climb in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Law School rankings, securing the No. 62 position nationwide. Since 2017, Wayne Law has advanced 38 places, an achievement that underscores the enduring strength of its academic programs. The law school also earned No. 25 in part-time law programs, the highest ranking in Michigan.

Wayne Law’s progress reflects a sustained commitment to academic excellence, practical training, and student success. With nearly a century of legal education behind it, the institution remains deeply rooted in both the intellectual foundations of the law and its real-world impact, from individual advocacy to corporate and national legal issues.

“We are proud to see Wayne Law continue its upward momentum in the U.S. News & World Report rankings,” said Interim Dean Lance Gable. “This year’s recognition reflects the consistency of our progress and the strength of our academic community, even as ranking methodologies continue to evolve. Our rise is a testament to the dedication and talent of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters who define what it means to be Warrior Strong.”

Located in the heart of Detroit, Wayne Law continues to play an active role in the city’s ongoing transformation. Students and faculty engage directly with the community, contributing to legal innovation and access to justice during a period of significant growth for both the university and the region.

Wayne Law’s combination of the lowest tuition in the state and nationally recognized education offers students a unique advantage: graduation without taking on excessive debt. The law school is ranked among the top 25 programs in the country for lowest debt-to-income ratio by the HEA Group (The National Jurist preLaw Magazine 2025) and No. 2 by U.S. News & World Report for ability to pay off debt with earnings. Wayne Law has also been named a “Best Value” law school for 12 consecutive years by National Jurist and preLaw Magazine.

Student outcomes and experiential learning opportunities further distinguish the program. Wayne Law reported a 95.2% post-graduate employment rate for the Class of 2025, while more than 85 employers participated in recent recruiting cycles. In the 2024–25 academic year alone, students in the externship program contributed 13,650 hours of legal service, and clinic students provided hands-on representation to clients in need. Additionally, the school’s Community Advocacy Clinic has been nationally recognized for innovation in social justice.

Wayne Law’s commitment to access and impact extends beyond the classroom. Its Student Voluntary Pro Bono Program has delivered more than 13,000 hours of service, and the school awarded over $8.2 million in scholarships in 2025. It’s network of trailblazers and changemakers equal more than 12,450 alumni, spanning across every major U.S. market and 19 countries.
