‘Power of Corpus Linguistics’ explored online

The Michigan Judicial Institute will present a webinar on “Ordinary Meaning and the Power of Corpus Linguistics Webinar” online Wednesday, May 13, from noon to 1 p.m.

Judges around the country have made headlines for attempting to use artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) to determine the ordinary meaning of a word or to interpret legal texts. Fortunately, there is a specialized discipline designed precisely for this task: corpus linguistics.

This webinar will introduce corpus linguistics as a method for evaluating the ordinary meaning of words and phrases, explore how courts have applied this tool around the country, and discuss its potential role in Michigan’s judicial system.

This program is eligible for continuing judicial education (CJE) credit: [1.0 Judicial Practice & Related Areas].
