It was a brief Climax-Scotts Board of Education meeting April 20, but two items for discussion were approved.
The Board unanimously approved a two-year co-op renewal for the 2026-2027, 2027-2028 school years with Battle Creek St. Philip for baseball.
The school district currently has a co-op arrangement with Battle Creek St. Philip and Calhoun Christian for baseball, however the contract renewal was with St. Philip only.
Lawn Maintenance Bid Awarded to The Groundskeeper
After reviewing four quotes for lawn and ground maintenance at the Jr./Sr. High School campus, the Board voted to approve the quote submitted by The Groundskeeper for the 2026 and 2027 mowing seasons by a 5-1 margin and one abstention. Board Vice-President Trent Piper, the owner of The Groundskeeper, abstained, and board member Jackie Longman voted no.
C-S Superintendent of Schools Doug Newington said there was a request for the quotes to include a per mowing rate, allowing the district to compare services offered fairly.
Newington said the overall bid from Naylor Landscape Management was $45,925; the overall bid from Battle Creek Landscape Service was $38,338; the overall bid from Kalamazoo Premier Services was $35,131; and the overall bid from The Groundskeeper was $34,625.
The C-S Superintendent said The Groundskeeper submitted the lowest per mowing figure at $1,050.
The per mowing figure from Naylor was $1401.09, Battle Creek Landscape, $1182 and Kalamazoo Premier, $1075.
The per mowing figure is for mowing everything one time. The vendor is asked to mow athletic fields multiple times during the week during the sports seasons.
The C-S Maintenance Department performs snow removal in the district and lawn mowing duties at the Elementary School.
The previous contract for lawn and maintenance was also with The Groundskeeper.
