At approximately 12:45 p.m., deputies located the suspect vehicle on Miller Drive. Citizens in the area assisted responding personnel by providing updated information regarding the suspect’s direction of travel on foot. A K-9 track was initiated in an effort to locate the fleeing subject.
During the search, deputies received additional information that the suspect had been seen near the Shell Gas Station on 35th Street. At approximately 1:17 p.m., troopers with the Michigan State Police and deputies with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office located the suspect at that location.
When officers attempted to take the subject into custody, he again fled on foot.
During the pursuit, the suspect repeatedly concealed his hands and then quickly presented them in a manner consistent with taking a shooting stance, causing officers to believe he may have been drawing a weapon. Officers, showing great restraint and discipline, continued issuing verbal commands throughout the incident.
The suspect then attempted to steal a pickup truck in an effort to escape. When that attempt was unsuccessful, he fled on foot once more before being tased and quickly taken into custody.
The suspect is being lodged at the Kalamazoo County jail and is expected to face charges including:
• Fleeing and Eluding
• Resisting and Obstructing
• Attempted Unlawful Driving Away of an Automobile (UDAA)
Anyone who may have further information is asked to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269-383-8748 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100. Information can also be reported online at www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
