Macomb County prosecutor’s office refers matter involving Judge John Chmura to Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has referred a criminal warrant request involving 37th District Court Judge John Chmura to the Prosecuting Attorneys Coordinating Council (PACC) for reassignment.

PACC will facilitate the transfer of the matter to an appropriate alternate jurisdiction.

Chmura was arrested in March for allegedly driving drunk after smashing into SMART bus in Sterling Heights.

Chmura has served on the bench since 1996 making him the longest-serving current judge in the area with nearly 30 years of service.

Prosecutor Peter Lucido says this referral is necessary to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

As Chmura presides over cases brought by the prosecutor’s office, maintaining impartiality and public confidence in the judicial process is paramount, Lucido said.

He said his office seeks to ensure there is no perception of preferential treatment or influence in matters pending before the court.
