G-A senior looks forward to
competing at next level in
powerlifting at university
When Galesburg-Augusta High School senior Bradlee Hubbard was a sophomore, powerlifting at the collegiate level certainly wasn’t on his radar.
But after Galesburg-Augusta varsity football coach and powerlifting coach Chuck Hadley encouraged him to try powerlifting, Hubbard discovered he enjoyed the sport and became more dedicated to it.
“I did it my sophomore year. I only got one meet in. My junior year, I started to fall in love with it, and this year I really committed to it,” said Hubbard.
He continued to work hard at the sport and his hard work is paying off.
Hubbard signed a letter of intent to attend Davenport University and be a member of the powerlifting team at a letter signing ceremony at G-A High School April 29 with family, friends, coaches and staff present.
“It’s almost surreal. I didn’t think I was going to be able to do it for a while and then I put more effort and I committed fully and I stopped wrestling two years ago and started powerlifting more full time. I’m just happy that I was able to pull it off,” said Hubbard.
Davenport University Powerlifting coach Connor Birchmeier said Hubbard sought him out and was very eager to join the Davenport powerlifting program. Birchmeier immediately saw the qualities he was looking for in a powerlifting student-athlete.
“He had the work ethic and he wanted to do what it took to move on to the next level. So that was the thing that immediately attracted me. Wanting to be a part of something bigger then himself and really contribute to a bigger team. That was a thing that really stuck out to me,” offered Birchmeier.
Birchmeier, who was the inaugural powerlifting head coach when powerlifting started at Davenport University in 2023, said Hubbard’s class completes four years of recruitments since the inaugural powerlifting season began.
“It’s kind of a vision that we’ve had for the last four years, building to where we would have every grade and have a fully developed program. So finally now we’re getting to realize that vision that we’ve been shaping and working towards for the last four years. I’m really excited to continue to build, see what we can do next year at nationals. Right now, our women’s teams rank second, our men’s teams rank third, so the goal is to obviously move into that first place, national championship position here soon,” explained Birchmeier.
Hubbard said he’s happy to be a part of a program still in its early years and hopes to be a contributing factor that will help shape the program for long term success.
“It’s awesome. I’m just happy I get to be a part of something bigger and make it better if I can,” said the Ram senior, who said he’s considering a business degree currently but its not totally certain what his major will be.
Hubbard will be joining Climax-Scotts High School senior Ryan Pejakovich as recent student-athletes signed by Birchmeier.
“There’s a few guys that I lifted with this year. It’s cool that people from the same kind of small town are going to be on the team with me and I get to experience it with them,” said Hubbard.
Birchmeier said the next level of competition for Hubbard will look different then what he is accustomed to seeing.
“The next level really, the numbers are quite a bit higher, the competition’s a lot more stiff. Stricter judging. You have to really hone in on your skills as a power lifter so that you can go out there and put up a big performance and be able to win close battles with other athletes. So it really just takes dedication, focus, making sure we’re training the standards that we need to, so on competition day, we can be ready for anything,” said Birchmeier.
Hubbard said he embraces the opportunity and challenge of competing at a higher level against good athletes.
“The thing I’m most excited for is the pool of knowledge that I’ll be able to learn from. Just to be able to learn and refine all my skills at the next level is what I’m most excited for,” said the Ram senior.
