G-A girls tennis team wins
two matches at regionals 


Two members of the Galesburg-Augusta girls tennis team won opening round matches at the Regionals May 14 at Hillsdale, helping the Lady Rams to a 7th place finish with three points in the 9-team regional.

Kalamazoo Christian, with 28 points, were regional champions.

After an opening round bye, Pewton Newton, at No. 3 singles, won her opening round match over Bronson’s Sophia Reed, 7-5, 6-3. She then lost to Kalamazoo Christian’s Katie Meints 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. Meints went on to win the flight.

Jilaya Henry-Phillips, at No. 4 singles, won her first round match over Hillsdale’s Chloe Denman, 6-2, 6-0.

She then fell to eventual flight champion, Caroline Zygadio of Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep, 6-0, 6-1.

Bronson captured an 8-0 win over the Galesburg-Augusta tennis team May 12 at G-A High School.

Jilaya Henry-Phillips, at No. 3 singles, won one set in a three-set loss 6-3, 4-6, 1-7.

Three Rams qualify for
state track finals


Galesburg-Augusta junior Patrick Armock qualified for the Division 3 State Finals in two events and sophomore Jenisyn Klimp and junior Ellesa Callender each qualified for the state finals in one event at the regionals May 15 at Hillsdale College.

The MHSAA Division 3 State Finals will be held at Kent City High School May 30.

Armock finished third in the discus with a throw of 138’7” and 7th in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 15.52. 

Running in the 400-meter run for the first time, Klimp qualified for the state finals with a second place finish and time of 1:01.86.

Callender won the discus competition with a throw of 103’11” and is the first female regional champion at G-A in the discus.

The G-A boys finished 13th out of a field of eight schools with eight points. The Lady Rams finished 11th out of 14 schools with 25 points.

Constantine was regional champions in the girls event with 94.5 points and Hillsdale won the boys regional championship with 88.5 points.

Rams fall to Hackett, still co-champions
of SAC division


Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep overcame a two-run deficit with a four-run seventh inning to defeat the Galesburg-Augusta varsity baseball team 7-6 in the first game of a SAC triangular for second place teams May 16 at G-A High School.

The Rams, 10-9 overall, also lost to South Haven 16-1 later in the day.

The Rams are still co-champions for the Division with Martin and were tied for first place in its division, but lost the tie-breaker for the triangular. 

Two one out walks and a hit batter started the trouble for G-A in Hackett’s four-run seventh inning.

A sacrifice scored one run, an RBI single tied the game and an RBI double moved the Irish ahead 7-6.

G-A was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Alex Krugh, who drove in one run, and Jonah Ranes, who had two RBI, each had two hits for G-A.

Krugh started and allowed four hits, two earned runs, five walks and he struck out nine in six and one-third innings pitched.

Carter Simmons suffered the loss in relief. He gave up two earned runs and two hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.

The Rams only managed two hits in the 16-1 loss to South Haven.

Carter Simmons and Kameron Prince had the two Ram hits.

Jonah Ranes suffered the loss.

A doubleheader against Otsego May 18 was cancelled because of rain.

Lady Rams drop 2
at SAC triangular


The Galesburg-Augusta varsity softball team dropped two games at a SAC triangular at Bridgman May 16.

G-A, now 8-18, lost to Bridgman 11-0 and Lawton 18-0.

The Rams struggled defensively in both games, committing a combined 21 errors that led to 21 unearned runs.

The Rams managed just one hit in the loss to Bridgman, a one out single by BreAnna Keene in the fourth inning.

Kaylin Wetzel suffered the loss on the mound.

G-A committed 14 errors that led to 15 unearned runs in the second game.

The Rams also struggled at the plate, with Caitlyn Valadez and BreAnna Keene each coming up with one hit.

Kaylee Bastian was tagged with the loss on the mound.

G-A Earns Split with Decatur

Kaylee Bastian tossed a three-hitter and Kaylin Wetzel and BreAnna Keene each had two hits to lead the Rams to a 4-3 win over Decatur in the first game of a doubleheader May 13.

Decatur won the second game 14-6.

Bastian did not allow an earned run, walked two and struck out three in seven innings pitched.

G-A fell behind 5-0 in the first inning and committed nine errors that led to six unearned runs in a 14-6 loss in the second game.

Ava Schelb, who had a double, had two of G-A’s five hits.

Kaylee Bastian pitched the first two innings and suffered the loss. She allowed four hits and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout.

Constantine Sweeps Pair from Rams


The Rams struggled defensively in both games of a doubleheader against Constantine May 12, dropping a 13-3 decision and a 16-9 game.

G-A committed 11 errors in the first game that led to four unearned runs.

Sienna Owens, Caitlyn Valadez, Piper Snodderly and Lili Jones, who had a double, had the G-A hits in the first game.

Kaylin Bastian only gave up four hits on the mound over five innings pitched but suffered the loss.

G-A outhit Constantine in the second game but committed eight miscues in the field.

Kaylin Wetzel, who had a triple and drove in two runs, led the Rams at the plate.

Piper Snodderly started and suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs and five walks.
