New C-S varsity football coach outlines vision

By Bruce Rolfe

New Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Justin Kirinovic outlined his vision for Climax-Scotts football at a meet and greet the new football coach event at Climax-Scotts Jr./Sr. High School May 30.

An audience of approximately 60 people including many players from the C-S football team attended the event.

Kirinovic first told the audience he grew up in Tawas where he played football.

He attended Western Michigan University where he received his BA degree in education and is currently attending WMU pursuing his MA in Education.

He embraces the opportunity to be a coach in a small town and welcoming community, take over a program that has had a tremendous amount of success and coach a group of student-athletes he feels are good students.

“I am unbelievably excited to be a part of the Climax-Scotts community. The school and community have welcomed me with opens arms which tells me I am in the right place. C-S has a great tradition of winning in the football program and I look forward to helping continue to build that.”

He previously held assistant football coaching jobs at Tawas Area High School, Parchment High School, and Gull Lake High School where he was the JV coach and assistant varsity coach and currently teaches.

The C-S position will be his first head coaching job, which he is looking forward to.

“I feel C-S is the perfect place to have that (first head coaching position) happen for me. I have been fortunate enough to learn under many great coaches when I was an assistant and I am excited to bring the great ideas and values they have given me along with my own to C-S,” offered Kirinovic.

He said he feels a high school football team needs to resemble a family because of the amount of time players spend together and the memories that are created.

The new Panther coach told the audience what he views the pillars of the program should be.

They include hard work, high standards, selflessness and what’s best for the family, accountability, discipline, mental and physical toughness, respect and love.

He told the audience his goal for the program is to produce “men for others.”

“We want to build outstanding fathers, husbands, and workers,” said Kirinovic.

The new Panther football coach then reviewed summer football related activities.

He reviewed playing time, noting playing time is earned, not given. Kirinovic said nothing is guaranteed from last year.

“Everyone is going to get a chance to show their skills,” he said.

He went over how important parent involvement is and expectations for player conduct.

Kirinovic felt the meet and greet event was a great way to launch his tenure at C-S.

“It was great to be able to meet some of the players, parents, and community members and I’m excited to meet more as my journey of being a Panther begins.  We have some great kids who I believe will represent C-S in a positive manner as student athletes.  I’m excited to call myself a Climax-Scotts Panther,” adds the new C-S varsity football coach.

The vacancy was created after the C-S School Board made the decision not to retain Tyler Langs as the varsity football coach and athletic director at a special school board meeting February 24.

Langs served as a co-head coach with his father, Hall of Fame coach and former longtime C-S varsity football coach Kevin Langs, in 2021 and became head coach in 2022.
