A partner at Goethel Engelhardt, PLLC, Engelhardt has devoted years of volunteer service to the Negligence Law Section, organizing continuing legal education conferences, recruiting distinguished lawyers and judges as faculty, and serving alongside the Section’s Executive Council and officers. His work reflects the Section’s mission to promote scholarship among Michigan practitioners and to advance the fair, equitable, and speedy administration of justice in the state’s trial and appellate courts.
In presenting the award, Section Chairperson Mark Gilchrist praised Engelhardt’s career and contributions:
“Chad has built an extraordinary career defined by exceptional service, unwavering professionalism, influential advocacy, dedication to education, and outstanding leadership. Before practicing law, Chad served more than twelve years in law enforcement. Since entering the legal profession, he has become widely respected not only as an attorney, but also as a mediator, educator, mentor, author, and leader within the legal community. He has dedicated substantial time to teaching future lawyers, improving professionalism and civility within the profession, and advancing dispute resolution efforts throughout Michigan.”
University of Michigan Law Professor Vivek Sankaran offered a similar heartfelt tribute:
“Chad embodies the essence of the best of our profession. He is compassionate, fearless and will not rest until we help those left behind. Chad doesn’t seem to sleep. He moves at a frenzied pace to spread justice in the world, but when he’s with you, he remains deeply present. He also seems to be learning all the time and is so deeply curious. He leaves his mark in every space he enters.”
Entering law practice after 12 years as a deputy sheriff, Engelhardt’s career spans over two decades of medical malpractice litigation, mediation, and legal education. In addition to serving as the education chair for the Negligence Law Section in partnership with the American Board of Trial Advocates-MI, Engelhardt is an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School and William and Mary Law School. A past chairperson of the Negligence law Section and past president of the Washtenaw Association for Justice, he remains an active leader within Michigan’s legal organizations. This includes his current chairmanship of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education and the Washtenaw County Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Section. He resides in Ann Arbor with his wife and law partner, Jennifer Engelhardt.
“This recognition belongs to a team,” Engelhardt said. “The work we do matters, not only to lawyers, but to the patients, families, and members of the public who depend on a justice system that is fair and accessible. I’m grateful and humbled to be part of it.”
The Negligence Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan provides education, information, and analysis to its members through seminars, public service programs, and publications, and works to promote the fair and efficient administration of negligence litigation throughout Michigan.
