The Climax-Scotts School District announced the hiring of Shane Wesseldyk as the district’s new athletic director and dean of students.
According to the school district’s June 11 release, Wesseldyk brings nearly three decades of experience in education, coaching, athletic administration, and student mentorship.
The school district’s release adds Wesseldyk currently serves as athletic director and event coordinator at Parchment Middle School, where he oversees athletic operations, coordinates events, manages facilities and equipment, and serves as a liaison between coaches, families, officials, and school administrators. He also teaches middle school science and is a certified mental performance coach, helping student-athletes develop the mental skills necessary to perform at their highest level.
A graduate of Cornerstone College with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, Wesseldyk later earned a Master of Arts in Sport Management from Western Michigan University.
His professional experience includes teaching physical education, health, and science; athletic administration; collegiate instruction; recreation management; and leadership roles in youth and adult athletic programs.
In addition to his educational and administrative experience, Wesseldyk brings more than 25 years of coaching experience in baseball, basketball, and volleyball. He has served in numerous coaching positions throughout southwest Michigan and has been a registered MHSAA baseball official since 1996.
Wesseldyk said the opportunity to serve Climax-Scotts in a role that combines athletics and student development is especially meaningful.
“I am excited for the opportunity to join Climax-Scotts Community Schools and become part of the Panther family,” said Wesseldyk.
“Throughout my career, I have been passionate about helping students grow both academically and personally while building strong athletic programs that emphasize character, accountability, and teamwork. I look forward to working with students, staff, families, and the community to continue that tradition at Climax-Scotts.”
Superintendent Doug Newington said Wesseldyk’s experience and student-centered approach make him an excellent addition to the district.
“Shane’s background in education, athletic leadership, and student mentorship stood out throughout the selection process,” said Newington. “His commitment to helping students succeed, coupled with his experience managing athletic programs and building positive relationships, makes him a tremendous fit for Climax-Scotts Community Schools.”
The athletic director vacancy was created The vacancy was created after the C-S School Board made the decision not to retain Tyler Langs as the varsity football coach and athletic director at a special school board meeting February 24.
Langs also served as the Dean of Students but resigned from that position.
