The 18th iteration of the Escape to Belle Isle this Saturday, July 18 will showcase metro Detroit’s community spirit in its finest form, as more than 500 participants are expected for a fun-filled event benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities Detroit.

The event on Belle Isle, the 982-acre state park in the Detroit River, was founded in 2009 by attorneys Jenna Wright Greenman and Milt Greenman, a wife-and-husband legal team dedicated to providing funding support for Ronald McDonald House of Detroit.

“We hope to raise about $50,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit (RMHD),” said Wright Greenman, a medical malpractice attorney for the Kitch law firm in Detroit.

Proceeds from previous Escape to Belle Isle events recently funded the construction of a special room at Hutzel Hospital, according to Wright Greenman.

“We just completed construction of a RMHD Family Room within Hutzel Hospital, right between the labor and delivery ward and the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) ward at Hutzel,” Wright Greenman related. “This allows moms and family members to have a place to rest after their baby is born and if the baby needs to have intensive care in the nursery – so that the family does not need to leave or rest on the floor, which is what they had to do before.

“This provides an intermediate space and area for these family members to be close to their babies until decisions are made if the baby needs to be transferred to Children’s (Hospital) for longer term care,” explained Wright Greenman.
“Then, the families usually go to the actual RMHD house to stay for extended periods.”

For the past two years, Wright Greenman served as chair of the Hutzel Hospital project, which was completed several months ago.

“It was very exciting to see it come to fruition, and all the proceeds that we raise from our Escape to Belle Isle event go to funding these rooms, supplies, etcetera for all the RMHD spaces,” said Wright Greenman.

The 2-mile, 5-kilometer (3.1-mile), and 10-kilometer races will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, while the Kids’ Fun Run (400 yards) will begin around 10 a.m., according to Wright Greenman. All registered runners and walkers will receive a T-shirt and medal.

The cost to enter the Fun Run, which is open to children ages 2-12, is $28, while the registration fee for the 2-mile is $45. The cost of entering the 5-km and 10-km races is $60. To register, visit www.escapetobelleislerace.com.

Members of the Agape Project, a Michigan-based nonprofit, also will be on hand for Saturday’s event, Wright Greenman noted.

“We had the Agape Project team up with us last year and again this year, as they are a group that have runners push specialized bike chairs for disabled individuals so that they can enjoy the thrill of the race experience,” Wright Greenman indicated. “They are quite inspiring.”

And both Wright Greenman and her husband, Milt, an attorney with Sam Bernstein Law, note that the Escape to Belle Isle is a “stroller and dog-friendly” event.

“Please bring your kiddos and your pup for a morning of family fun,” said Wright Greenman.
