On July 10, 2026, at approximately 4:20 p.m., the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 16000 block of East Augusta Drive following a reported felonious assault. The reporting party stated that an individual at the residence had pointed a firearm at her earlier in the day.
Upon arrival, deputies were met by the suspect’s father, who reported that his son appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. The suspect briefly exited the residence, yelled incoherently at deputies, and then retreated inside.
Based on the reported assault and concerns for those inside the home, deputies established a perimeter and prepared to safely take the suspect into custody. Without warning or apparent provocation, the suspect fired multiple rounds at deputies with a rifle.
No deputies were struck, and deputies returned fire while moving to cover. Additional personnel from the Augusta Village Police Department, Richland Village Police Department, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Portage Department of Public Safety, and Michigan State Police responded to assist. The Kalamazoo Metro SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams were also activated.
For approximately 10 hours, negotiators worked toward a peaceful resolution while all other occupants were safely removed from the residence. Despite continued communication and the use of less-lethal tactics intended to encourage his surrender, the suspect refused to exit.
The suspect later fired from an upstairs bedroom window toward officers and law enforcement equipment. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced deceased. The Michigan State Police has assumed responsibility for the officer-involved shooting investigation.
In accordance with standard protocol, the involved KCSO deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave and will be provided appropriate resources to recover from this traumatic event.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the loss of life and extends its thoughts to the family and all those affected. We are also deeply grateful that no deputies, assisting officers, or community members were injured during this prolonged and dangerous incident.
