Boxing event at G-A High School August 1 will be memorial for Oliver Lewis

Kalamazoo boxing promoter and trainer Curtis Isaac and Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools are teaming up for an unforgettable boxing event August 1 at 7 p.m. at G-A High School.

Isaac, owner of Kalamazoo Eastside Boxing Club, said the 15-bout event will be a memorial for longtime local boxing legend Oliver Lewis, who passed away in June.

The 15-bout card will include boxers from the Kalamazoo Eastside Boxing Club, a team from Canada and other boxers from the State of Michigan and around the country.

Cost of admission is $15.

Isaac, who boxed with Lewis on the Kalamazoo Boxing Academy team, said Oliver was one of the most popular boxers from the area.

According to his obituary. Oliver excelled in wrestling while attending Kalamazoo Central High School, however he went on to thrive in boxing.

His obituary notes Lewis was a three-time Michigan Golden Gloves Champion. Isaac said Lewis was also a three-time AAU State Champion and All-Army State Champion.

Lewis’ obituary said the Kalamazoo boxer also earned recognition as V Corps and USAREUR Open Boxing Champion in 1978. He also received a War Eagles Certificate of Achievement as an Army Specialist 4. His obituary said his highest rank was SP5.
