Anyone thirsting for a live summer comedy experience for the whole family should look no further than the Quonset Hut Theater in Athens. On the stage there July 31-August 2, members of Athens Community Theater (ACT) will be performing “Drinking Habits 2: Caught in the Act.” The farcical play picks up where the original “Drinking Habits” play left off last spring on the Quonset Hut stage.
This full-length, two-act Tom Smith comedy is brought to the local stage through special arrangements with Playscripts, Inc. It’s built on the premise that life has become too mundane for the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing following their stint (in the previous play) of making wine to save the convent. News that the orphanage where characters Paul and Kate were reared is in peril sets them about wanting to do some more “fundraising” for a good cause. That’s where the mix-ups and mayhem begin, including with Paul and Sally following another flight from the altar.
“This play is equally as funny as the first ‘Drinking Habits’ was and brings back most all of the characters from that production. If you liked that one, you’ll like this one,” said Director Brad Kenyon. “We’ve got a bunch of really talented kids who stepped up and were able to apply their natural character traits to their stage characters. I also gave them room to improvise with the physical comedy. It’s not quite Three Stooges level, but a lot of fun.”
Torie Banks and Shannon Kenyon have re-inhabited the roles of on-again/off-again couple Sally and Paul. “I felt like I had a better start with this play because I already knew my character, so I know more of what to expect,” Banks said. Kenyon agreed that it’s nice to be doing something new with a familiar character. The show is a family-friendly, summer heat-beating treat.
The cast of “Drinking Habits 2” features Emma Tennyson as Sister Philamena; Patti McGlashen as Sister Augusta; James Zongker as George; Laura Russell as Mother Superior; Shannon Kenyon as Paul; Torie Banks as Sally; Cora Zongker as Kate; and Paul Snyder as Father Chenille.
“Drinking Habits 2” is directed by Brad Kenyon, with Roseann Kenyon serving as stage manager and Nick Enlow and Mark Doubleday handling lights and sound.
“Drinking Habits 2” performances will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 31, with 4 p.m. matinees on both Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Admission is $10 per person at the door. “Popcorn Lady” Sarah Jordan-Grubb will be set up in the lobby with multiple flavors of popcorn and other concessions to enhance the theater-going experience. Anyone with questions may call 269-729-5278.
