Serving The Community In Public Office For
28 Years Has Been Rewarding For Scott Torrance

He’s worked through the election process when paper ballots gave way to punch cards and the current process of having ballots counted electronically, attended meetings when village or township officials have argued to the point where they have raised their voices at each other and he’s even seen an official resign after leaving their spouse and moving away with another person.

You might say Climax Village Clerk Scott Torrance has seen a lot in the 28 years he has served in public office. With the exception of a period of time in the early 1990s when he gave up the clerk position and served as a trustee, 26 of the 28 years have been as the Village Clerk.

Torrance also served the role as both Climax Township and Village of Climax Clerk after he was elected as Climax Township Clerk in 2004, a role he kept for three years before resigning in his fourth year.

Torrance, who Kalamazoo County Clerk Tim Snow said currently has the third highest number of years of service in the county as a clerk, will be stepping down as Village Clerk officially July 31.

It Could Have Been Much Worse

After Scotts Country Store owner Robert Beardsley took a few days to process what could have happened after the driver of a pickup truck accidently crashed through the Norscot entrance to his store July 20 with customers and employees inside, it leaves him amazed and very thankful no one got hurt.

The typical business setting where customers can often be seen visiting with each other near the door and employees busy doing their work turned into chaos for a few seconds when the front end of a pick up truck came crashing through the door, sending bricks, broken glass and inventory all across the floor.

There were children in the store and Beardsley himself was six to eight feet from the door when the truck came crashing through.

C-S Jr./Sr. High School Principal, Board Member Resigns;
Track, Unit Vent Bids Come In Under Budget

The Climax-Scotts Board of Education will be taking a look at two setbacks that were sandwiched around a positive issue that took place earlier this week.

C-S Superintendent of Schools Dr. Geoffrey Balkam said he received a letter of resignation last week from Jr./Sr. High School principal Debra Jarvis and on Tuesday received a resignation letter from board of education member Keith Edwards. But the C-S superintendent was upbeat that the bid opening process Tuesday for the new track, unit vents and air exhausts produced numbers that are estimated to be well under budget.

Standard Station Under New Manager

Effective last week, the management of the Standard Station on N. Main St., Climax was taken over by Mrs. Donna Wedig. Mrs. Wedig not only is the new manager, but also does some of the work and is apt to be the one to greet her customers at the gas pump.

She is assisted by her husband, Roger, who has worked on cars all his life, and is a good man to have in the service area.

THE BIG FISH

Andy Anderson has the big Fish story for this season and he got the Fish to back up the story with. While Andy with his son Cloyse and Milford Snow were peacefully dangling a frog in the waters of Potters Lake, a bite was telephoned up the long cane pole. Andy hooked him and the fight was on.

The fish had pretty much its own way for a few minutes, the boys having a hard time keeping the boat straight and out of the rushes. Finally they landed the individual, it was dandy bass tipping the scales at just 6 pounds which is the largest bass brought to our attention this year.

Bates Dewey had just such an experience while fishing with Herb Smith the other morning. A bit, he is on, I can’t handle him, Smith pulls off his coat, take your time, pull steady don’t break the line, keep up all the slack until finally after 15 minutes of intense excitement the fight is won, he is landed, a dandy leather back turtle. Didn’t weigh him.

PAPER BOY FOR SCOTTS

The Crescent is starting out on a new plan next week by having a news boy at Scotts. The papers will be sent to him and he will deliver them at your door each Friday for 15¢ per month, he will collect after the first of each month. Those on the subscription list which are paid in advance will have their paper delivered by the news boy and after their subscriptions has expired then be can make his collections monthly the same as the balance of the list.

Gilbert Russell will look after the route and any favors you show him will be very much appreciated.
