Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido recently introduced the newest member of his team.
Lucky, a former Leader Dog for the Blind, has officially begun his role as the office’s Canine Victim Advocate and will serve as a source of comfort and support for victims and others who may be navigating difficult circumstances.
In his new role, according to a news release from the prosecutor, Lucky will spend time with victims and make appearances at treatment courts, senior scam prevention presentations and other community events.
He will also provide a positive and calming presence throughout the prosecutor’s office, Lucido said.
“Every person who comes through the doors of the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office should know that we are here to serve them,” Lucido said. “Lucky brings a special kind of comfort that can help put people at ease during difficult moments.
“We are proud to welcome him to our team and look forward to the difference he will make for victims, our staff and the community.”
Lucky previously served as a Leader Dog for the Blind before beginning his new career as a Canine Victim Advocate.
His “experience, friendly demeanor and eagerness to please will help him transition into a role focused on offering comfort, companionship and reassurance,” according to the prosecutor’s announcement.
The officer’s prior Canine Victim Advocate — Peanut — moved to another jurisdiction with his handler late last year.
Lucky is owned by Kumar Palepu, chief of the District and Specialty Courts, who will serve as his primary handler.
Other members of the prosecutor’s office will also assist with Lucky when he is at work.
“As he continues his training, Lucky will spend time throughout the office becoming familiar with the people and environments he may encounter in his new role,” the office statement continued. “Canine advocates can provide a calming and supportive presence to individuals facing stressful or emotionally difficult situations.
“The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office looks forward to watching Lucky grow into his new responsibilities and become an important member of the MCPO family.
