The Climax Township Board faced a light agenda at its regular meeting September 9, however several topics were reviewed.
The Climax Township Board decided to resume discussion about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) program until a future meeting when more information is available.
The NFOP is a federal program managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The NFIP is a program that makes federally-backed flood insurance available in those states and communities that agree to adopt and enforce flood-plain management ordinances to reduce future flood damage.
The township would have to be a part of the plan that would allow township residents to purchase flood insurance.
Treasurer Steve Walman said he sought more information but did not receive a response yet.
Supervisor Report
Climax Township Supervisor Trent Piper said about three pickup loads of lawn debris, sticks and shrub material was dumped in the rear of Gilson Cemetery.
Fire Department Report
Climax Township Fire Chief Scott Smith said the local fire department responded to 44 calls for service in the month of August. Ten of those calls were in Wakeshma Township. The fire department responded to a total of 33 medical calls, two calls that were cancelled enroute, one fire alarm, two power lines down, one lift assist, one personal injury accident, two vehicle fires, and two burning complaints. The fire department had three automatic aid calls received, one mutual aid received call and two mutual aid given calls.
Smith said he received a picture of the new rescue fire truck being built by T-Line EV LLC. He hopes the truck will be delivered some time in November.
The new rescue rig will replace the current rescue truck, which will be used primarily as a grass rig and secondary rescue truck.
In other items covered at the September 8 meeting:
• The Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department responded to 25 citizen initiated calls for service in Climax Township in the month of August. There were 22 officer initiated calls for service in the township in August.
• County Commissioner John Gisler said revenues from the Kalamazoo County Fair covered expenses and “possibly made $6,000 or $7,000 to the good side.”
