The Department of Attorney General charged two people in separate cases of making threats against elected officials.
Alicia Choucair of Roseville allegedly called local dispatch to threaten violence against a mosque and Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud if “your people” were not kept out of her town.
Choucair was arraigned on Sept. 17 and charged with two counts of false report or threat of terrorism, which are both a 20-year felony, one count of using a computer to commit a crime, another 20-year felony, and one count of a true threat hate crime, a two-year felony. Choucair was given a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear for a probable cause conference on Sept. 30 at the 19th District Court in Dearborn.
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations welcomed the charges.
“Threats of violence aimed at house of worship and elected leaders cross a dangerous line and threaten the safety and peace of our entire community,” CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid said in a statement. “We remain committed to standing against hate and ensuring that our houses of worship and civil leaders are protected."
Anthony Dekinderen allegedly emailed a Michigan journalist with threats to kill the Supreme Court, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
Dekinderen was charged with nine counts of false reports or threat of terrorism. Dekinderen was arraigned in the 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills on Sept. 19 and is scheduled to appear on Sept. 28. He was given a $5 million bond and GPS tether.
“Thousands of Michigan residents answer the call to serve through elected office, be it as the local mayor or in statewide office. Unfortunately, hate crimes and threats of terrorism against officials at all levels of government are becoming increasingly common,” Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. “Let these charges serve as a warning that Michigan takes threats of violence very seriously and will prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.”
