The Climax-Scotts high school and middle school girls and boys cross country teams competed in an SCAA meet at Pittsford September 16, but neither teams had enough runners to score as a team.

The high school boys had two runners enjoy personal best times.

Freshman Blake Morrison was the first Panther to finish, placing third out of 29 runners with a personal best time of 20:13.86.

Senior Eli DeWaal also had a personal best time (23:41.87).

Junior Alyssa Morrison placed sixth out of 17 runners in the girls race with a time of 25:42.76. 

Freshman Topanga Fields enjoyed a personal best time (28:44.33).

Both C-S runners that participated in the middle school race enjoyed personal best times.

C-S 8th grader Jaxon Marlowe finished 21st in the boys race with a personal best time of 17:09.84.

Sixth grader Ryleigh Fields finished fourth in the girls race with a personal best time of 14:53.74.

C-S drops match, another hitter injured

Already playing without two starting hitters, the Climax-Scotts varsity volleyball team dropped a match to Hillsdale Academy in three sets (10-25, 13-25, 14-25) September 17 on the road and also lost another hitter to an injury.

C-S coach Jeanelle Pontoni said one of her hitters will be evaluated after suffering a knee injury that could be season ending.

The C-S coach already has one starting hitter on the sidelines with a serious knee injury that may also be season ending and another starting hitter that was removed from the Panther Invite September 12 with an undisclosed injury and remains sidelined.

Pontoni said despite the flurry of injuries, she felt her team played hard against a very strong Hillsdale Academy team that were ranked 9th in the state entering the match.

Kendal Reitz had a team high 10 digs and Olivia Bolt contributed nine. Mia Reschner led the team in kills with three and Alessandra Pontoni led the team with seven assists and one ace.

C-S coaching staff eager to
see response after first loss

The message was crystal clear when first year Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Justin Kirinovic talked to his team following a 32-8 loss to Colon on the road September 18.

Kirinovic said facing adversity like the Panthers did at Colon and losing for the time this season, is a lot like life.

“You can lay down and die or you can get up and fight,” the first year coach told his team.

The Panther coaching staff will be eager to see how the team responds September 26 in a Saturday night clash with the Battle Creek St. Philip-Athens Co-op team at C.W. Post Field at 7 p.m.

“We still have five games left this season and hopefully more after that. We have to get up and fight. That’s going to be one of the things we teach our kids. Life is going to do this to us. We’re going to teach them right now at the age of 15, 16, 17, so that way when they become 30, 40 years old they still remember this,” said Kirinovic.

That message of bouncing back right away resonated with the players after the game.

“I’m going to bounce back and I think that this next week at practice, us boys who really didn’t play much here today, we’ll really light it up. Ultimately, we always bounce back,” said senior Elijah Bowron.

The Panthers started the game without four starters - junior Easton VanMiddlesworth, and seniors Elijah Bowron, Cooper Dinse and Maddox Wyman. Bowron did not play the entire game while VanMiddlesworth, Dinse and Wyman saw action in the second half.

An explanation was not provided to the Crescent after the game why the four players were held off the field.

Colon took the opening kick off and stuck to a ground game. Magi quarterback Jeremiah West and back Jabari Falls enjoyed big gains running behind an offensive line that opened up some nice gaps.

Falls got the home team on the scoreboard at the 7:57 mark of the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run, capping a  nine play, 87 yard drive that took 4:03. Miguel Guijarro kicked the extra point and Colon led by a 7-0 count after one quarter.

A 53-yard punt return by West to the Panther seven-yard line early in the second quarter set up Colon’s next score.

West followed a five-yard pickup by Falls with a two-yard touchdown run at the 9:21 mark of the second quarter. The extra point kick attempt was blocked.

The Panther offense could not come up with a first down and had to give the ball up.

The Magi relied heavily on its ground game on their next score. Colon marched 82 yards in six plays while using 3:18, with West coming through on a fourth and eight play with a 69-yard touchdown run on a fake punt with 3:47 left in the second quarter. The two-point conversion attempt was not good but Colon had a 19-0 lead.

The Colon defense continued to frustrate the C-S offense and the visitors found themselves in another punting situation when the offense could not come up with a first down.

Colon senior Michael House got through and blocked a punt the Magi recovered on the C-S 35-yard line with 2:33 left in the second quarter.

A 42-yard run by Falls followed by a fumble on the play that was recovered by the Magi left the home team on the C-S 13-yard line.

Falls followed a five-yard penalty to Colon with an 18-yard touchdown run with 1:31 left in the second quarter.

Guijarro kicked the extra point and Colon enjoyed a 26-0 halftime lead.

The C-S offense started the second half executing much better, coming up with two first downs including an Alex Wurtzel to Maddox Wyman 16-yard pass play on a fourth and nine play that put the visitors on the Magi 34-yard line.

The drive stalled and the Magi held a 26-0 lead after three quarters.

An interception by Colon near the end of the third quarter was called back on a roughing the passer penalty against the Magi and C-S started the fourth quarter on the Colon 18-yard line.

Alex Wurtzel completed the scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown run with 10:06 left in the fourth quarter. Wurtzel ran in the two-point conversion, reducing C-S’ deficit to 28-6.

C-S attempted an onside kick but the Magi recovered on the C-S 45-yard line.

After the C-S defense held Colon on a fourth and three play, the momentum was shortlived when West intercepted an Alex Wurtzel pass with 6:49 left in the game.

Starting the drive on the Panther 45-yard line, Colon found the endzone again four plays later when Falls scored at the 4:41 mark of the fourth quarter with a 12-yard touchdown run. Charlie Wielenga’s extra point kick attempt was blocked.

C-S falls to 3-1 while Colon remains undefeated at 4-0. 

C-S, held to 84 yards rushing, was led by Maximus Wurtzel’s 33 yards on 12 carries.

Alexander Wurtzel completed 12-of-22 passes for 94 yards.

Maddox Wyman caught five passes for 48 yards.

Falls finished with 204 yards on 21 carries and West had 100 yards on eight carries for the Magi, who finished with 301 yards on the ground.

Dane Sattler had five solo tackles and one assist, including one sack for a four yard loss.

Tucker Davis led Colon with 11 tackles including one tackle for a two yard loss.

C-S was penalized seven times for 60 yards and Colon was flagged five times for 34 yards.

“They (Colon) were doing the stuff that we saw all week in film and in practice. It was more just on our end. We didn’t execute well right from the get go. We really couldn’t climb our way out of that hole. We’ve done a great job all year getting over adversities and tonight we just couldn’t do that,” observed Kirinovic.

C-S will face the Battle Creek St. Phil-Athens co-op Sept. 26 at Post Field in Battle Creek.

Colon will face Mendon September 25.
