First year Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Justin Kirinovic once again saw a pattern of his team responding to adversity quickly in a 46-0 win over Battle Creek St. Philip at Post Field September 26.

C-S, now 4-1, was coming off a frustrating 32-8 loss to Colon and the shot of momentum comes at the right time for the Panthers, who will face a talented Marcellus team (4-1) at Marcellus October 2 at 7 p.m.

“Marcellus is going to be a great team. We’ve got to come ready to go and get the job done to be able to execute against them,” observed Kirinovic.

“Last week was really tough for us. I was glad to see the kids  once again really respond well. We pitched a shutout and I think they did a really good job of bouncing back from a tough loss last week,” continued the C-S coach.

The Panther coach was also pleased how his team responded to some early offensive challenges when the St. Phil defense stopped the Panther offense on a fourth and inches play at the goal line and held C-S again on a fourth and 13 at the St. Phil 18-yard line in the first quarter.

A fumbled snap on a punt play that fell into the St. Phil endzone where an alert Easton VanMiddlesworth fell on the ball with 7.2 seconds left in the first quarter, gave C-S a 6-0 lead and provided some much needed momentum. Alex Wurtzel ran in the two-point conversion, sending C-S into the second quarter with an 8-0 lead.

C-S recovered an onside kick on the kickoff, setting the stage for the rest of the game when the Panthers took control.

“We struggled a little bit in the beginning. I just think we started a little slow. Once we kind of got up and going we were able to find our holes and find where we needed to go and get the job done,” said Kirinovic.

A 10-yard pass from Alex Wurtzel to Elijah Bowron and another eight-yard pass from Wurtzel to Wyatt Deeds three plays later put C-S on the Tiger 14-yard line. Wurtzel teamed up with Bowron on a 14-yard strike to finish the drive, giving C-S a 14-0 lead with 8:12 left in the second quarter (the two-point conversion was no good).

The St. Phil offense was unable to secure a first down against the tough Panther defense and the visitors were soon back in the endzone.

The offensive line opened a big hole for Bowron who enjoyed consecutive runs of 17 yards, leaving C-S on the St. Phil 26-yard line.

Alex Wurtzel completed the drive on the next play, running 26 yards for a touchdown with 2:31 left in the second quarter (the two-point conversion failed) and C-S took a 20-0 lead into halftime.

The Tiger offense was only on the field two plays to start the second half. Brody Vosburg recovered a fumble just 19 seconds into the third quarter, giving C-S the ball on the Panther 48-yard line.

The St. Phil defense held C-S on a fourth and four at the Tiger 16-yard line, however the Panther defense held the Tigers without a first down, giving the ball back to C-S at the St. Phil 32-yard line.

Five plays later Bowron found a big hole and scampered 18 yards for a touchdown at the 5:21 mark of the third quarter for a 26-0 lead. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

A seven-yard touchdown run by Alex Wurtzel followed by a successful extra point kick by Dane Sattler with 25.2 seconds left in the third quarter sent C-S into the fourth quarter with a 33-0 lead.

The tough C-S defense held St. Phil without a first down and the offense started what turned out to be a quick scoring drive on the Tiger 39-yard line with 10:50 left in the game.

It took just three plays for C-S to enter the endzone, with an Alex Wurtzel to Wyatt Deeds pass play that covered 32 yards finishing the drive with 9:20 left in the game. Sattler kicked the extra point, giving the visitors a 40-0 lead.

The C-S defense gave the offense one more chance to score after holding the Tigers without a first down.

With many players on the field who came off the bench, the younger Panthers came through when freshman quarterback Gunner Wyman scored on a 24-yard run with 1:43 left. The extra point kick was no good, leaving the final score 46-0.

Unofficially, Bowron finished with 117 yards on 15 carries, Wurtzel picked up 75 yards on 12 carries and Wurtzel completed 8-of-12 passes for 88 yards.

Blake Wechsler had six solo tackles and two assists and Dane Sattler had seven tackles including six solos.
