There are four new faces taking over athletic director positions in Muskegon-area high schools.

Many of those faces will look familiar, though, as they have already established themselves in the area sports scene in other capacities.

Trevor Hinshaw, Jeff Lohman, David Fox and Jeremy Case have been hired at Muskegon Catholic Central, Holton, Muskegon Heights Public School Academy and Fruitport Calvary Christian, respectively.

For Hinshaw, he’s been here before. The 46-year-old Mona Shores alum served as the Crusaders’ athletic director four years in the mid-to-late 2000’s as well as their boys basketball coach in the same time frame.

Hinshaw, who also coached the girls basketball squad at Orchard View and led the Cardinals to the state quarterfinals, started thinking about getting back into the prep scene when the calendar flipped to 2026.

“I told my wife (Michelle) six or seven months ago that I was starting to get that itch again a little bit,” said Hinshaw, who also coached basketball as an assistant at Lake Superior St. and worked as an AD for 11 years at Grand Rapids Catholic Central while coaching hoops there for seven years. “That fire was starting to burn a little bit to get back involved. I’d been out of it for a few years. I just told her I would keep my eye open, and if the right opportunity came along, I would look at it.  Obviously, after having been at Muskegon Catholic before having a great experience here for four years, I have a high regard for the school and the people and the community. It was an opportunity I definitely wanted to look at, and fortunately, it worked out.”

Hinshaw took a few years off from AD and coaching work to build up his business, Kinnect360, a professional development platform used by schools and programs across the nation, including former University of Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein.
Kinnect360 provides resources focused on leadership, mindset, character development, and professional growth for coaches and student-athletes.

“We are thrilled to welcome Trevor back to Muskegon Catholic Central,” said Dr. Jerry McDowell, MCC’s President, in a press release/notice to the MCC community. “Trevor brings a unique combination of experience to this role. His track record as a coach and athletic director, speak for itself.”

Hinshaw was officially hired back in June.

He’s hoping to help reestablish some of the strong programs the Crusaders have had in the past.

“There’s so much potential here,” Hinshaw said. “There really is. But there’s no shortcut to reaching that potential. It’s the work. We’ve got a lot of hard work to do...that’s our student-athletes, that’s our coaches, that’s our parents, that’s our community. If we’re going to get this thing really rolling the way I believe it can, it’s going to take everybody. I think we should be the No. 1 small-school athletic department in the state of Michigan. It’s easy to say it, but there’s no shortcuts to get there. It’s going to take a lot of work.”

Hinshaw’s focus on getting there will be to support the coaches and keep the lines of communication open and develop the athletes who choose to play there and want to put in the work.

Lohman, a Montague native, is probably best known for building the Oakridge girls soccer program into one of the better programs in West Michigan.

He led the Eagles girls teams to eight West Michigan Conference titles, seven district championships and one regional title in his 16 years at the helm. He also coached the Oakridge boys soccer team for two years during that 16-year-stint. He then moved on to coach the women’s soccer team at Muskegon Community College.

Lohman’s goals at Oakridge and MCC included more than just success on the field. He wanted to develop strong, intelligent and successful women.

He hopes to bring that same approach to the whole Holton athletic department in all sports.

“I was looking for a change,” said the 53-year-old Lohman, who taught social studies at Muskegon for the previous five years and 16 years at Oakridge, along with a career readiness class. “I saw the posting and what interested me was the family engagement part of it. So I’m 50/50 family engagement specialist and athetic director. I’m familiar with the area, and I was actually county commissioner for a couple of years in the area. I liken the Holton area to being similar to the Oakridge area, so when I saw the position, I threw my hat into the ring.

“(The first couple of months) have been really, really busy” added Lohman. “It’s a really good support network. The MHSAA and the MIAAA have a really good support network for new AD’s. With my officiating and coaching background, I’m pretty familiar with most of the other AD’s as well. We have a pretty active chat going where if we have questions the answers come shooting right back. At training they told me you’re going to feel like you’re behind every day, and that’s pretty accurate.”

Lohman attended Muskegon Community College, has a teaching degree from Grand Valley State University, a Master’s in Education Leadership from Western Michigan University along with a Family Studies degree.

“I’ve enjoyed (the new job),” added Lohman, who also studied Change Management at Michigan State University and served in the Army in 1991-1994. “I come to work happy. I was starting to get tired in the classroom. I’m excited for the opportunity to help raise the Red Devils to a whole new level.”

Fox, a 2007 graduate of Muskegon Heights, was a 3-sport star in his prep days, earning All-State accolades in football, basketball and track.

He was already back with the Tigers in one capacity, as Muskegon Heights named Fox the boys varsity basketball coach in November.

As of June 2026, he’s doubled his role at his hometown school after being tabbed the athletic director.

“It feels great: It feels like home,” said Fox, who played football at Eastern Michigan University before transferring to Grand Valley State to continue his playing career in both football and basketball. “I’ve received a lot of love and support. The people have been reaching out to support me in my return.”

Fox said he realized he wanted to coach and become an athletic director when he was in college.

He just didn’t realize it would happen so soon.

He was preparing to coach JV basketball at Mona Shores last fall before the Tigers’ head-coaching position became available.

His mission as the boys’ hoops coach and athletic director is to bring back the culture and reestablish middle school feeder programs so the athletes stay at Muskegon Heights.

“I just have to trust God’s timing,” Fox said. “I want to make sure we have the programs and the opportunities for our young players to grow up and thrive at Muskegon Heights.”

Case, who was hired in July, has been an educator at Grand Haven High School for 25 years and has coached boys and girls tennis at the varsity and JV levels for 15 years. He also brings experience as an elementary and middle school basketball coach at Calvary Christian, where for the past two years, he has been the assistant JV hoops coach.

The new Calvary Christian AD earned a Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University in 2000 and his master’s from WMU in 2005.

“What drew me to Calvary Christian Schools was the opportunity to be part of a Christ-centered community where faith is intentionally woven into everything we do,” said Case, a Clarksville native who has lived in Grand Haven for 25 years. “Calvary is also special to me because my wife and kids are a part of the school community as well. I get the unique opportunity to work with students in the classroom and athletics while also being present for my own kids.”
