On Oct. 1, Sterling Heights firefighters responded to a Dollar Tree on Hall Road for a report of downed utility wires. It is alleged that a woman repeatedly walked between a silver BMW and a nearby utility pole which was later found to have charring and smelled of gasoline.
When firefighters attempted to contact the driver, she allegedly accelerated through the parking lot at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a firefighter.
During the investigation, Sterling Heights police received information from Auburn Hills Police and Michigan State Police identifying the driver as a suspect in a series of recent arson incidents involving utility poles in Auburn Hills, as well as a building fire in Ypsilanti.
Investigators subsequently identified the alleged driver as Kasheia Lewis-Strauss.
Last Friday, Lewis-Strauss was stopped for an alleged traffic violation by Pittsfield Township Police and taken into custody on a warrant related to the Oct. 1 allegations.
Lewis-Strauss was arraigned Monday before Magistrate Jean M. Cloud of the 41A District Court in Sterling Heights on the following:
• Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Felonious Assault), a 4-year felony
• Third Degree Arson, a 10-year felony.
Cloud set Lewis-Strauss’s bond at $150,000 cash or surety. She is scheduled to appear before Judge Eric Shepherd at the 41A District Court for a Probable Cause Conference on Oct. 15.?
