Bar associations taking part in expungement fair

The City of Southfield and Southfield Alumnae Chapter (SAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in partnership with Lakeshore Legal Aid (LLA), Southfield Police, Wolverine Bar Association, and D. Augustus Straker Bar Association will host an Expungement Clinic & Resource Fair on Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The fair will provide the opportunity for individuals seeking to clear eligible criminal convictions from their records as well as additional community resources, skillset information, and other assistance. To receive assistance, individuals must register in advance by Thursday, March 23 at https://tinyurl.com/Southfield-Expunge ment-Clinic. Eligible applicants will be contacted with an appointment time and location.

Expungements are for State of Michigan convictions only, including up to three felonies, two convictions for assaultive crimes, one drinking and driving offense, and unlimited misdemeanors. No capital offenses and most criminal sexual conduct convictions cannot be expunged.

“Everyone deserves an opportunity for a fresh start at a new life,” commented Oakland County 46th District Court Chief Judge Shelia Johnson. “This Expungement Fair (to clear criminal records of convictions) is vitally important for all those who may have made some bad decisions in their past, but are committed to working on a bright future!”

For additional information, contact the 46th District Court at 248-796-5800.

District court judges featured in next ‘Luncheon Limine’ April 20

In its continuing efforts to foster collegiality between the Oakland County bench and bar, the Oakland County Bar Association (OCBA) will continue its “Luncheon Limine” brown bag lunch series between judges and attorneys online via Zoom. “Luncheon Limine—District Court Part I” will take place Thursday, April 20, from noon to 1 p.m.

Participants can bring their questions (and their lunch) for an informal discussion of legal topics and practice issues. April’s lunch will feature Oakland County 46th District Court Judge Debra Nance and Oakland County 52-3 District Court Judge Julie A. Nicholson. The judges will share their preferred protocols and procedures as well as advice and insight on practicing in the district courts.

This event is free for OCBA member and $15 for non-members. Space is limited. To register and receive the Zoom details, visit www.ocba.org and click on “events.” For questions, contact Jennifer Roosenberg at jroosenberg@ocba.org or 248-334-3400.
