The Resolution Center will present its Conflict Resolution Advocacy and Lawrence W. Beckett Volunteer of the Year Awards on Tuesday, April 11 at the non-profit organization’s 24th Annual Evening at the Movies.
This year’s event, held at a Sterling Heights theater complex, will benefit the center’s youth programs.
The Conflict Resolution Advocacy Award will be presented to 41-A District Judge Douglas P. Shepherd and 41-A Magistrate Michael R. Osaer in recognition of their continuing support for alternative dispute resolution.
“We are incredibly appreciative of Judge Shepherd, Magistrate Osaer and the entire staff at the 41-A District Court in Shelby Township for the collaborative relationship they have forged with The Resolution Center over the past two and a half years,” said Craig Pappas, executive director of the center, located in Mount Clemens.
“This relationship has allowed the residents and business owners in Shelby and Macomb Townships greater access to alternative dispute resolution and face-to-face confidential mediation,” Pappas added.
The Lawrence W. Beckett Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes volunteers for their dedication and commitment to providing mediation services.
This year’s recipients are Curtis Boehmer of Harbor Beach and Richard Cannon of Lexington.
Boehmer, who currently serves as the Commander of the Michigan Wing Civil Air Patrol, is a retired speech pathologist for the Huron Intermediate School District.
Cannon is a community development consultant. Both have been volunteer mediators with Center since 2015.
Founded in 1993, The Resolution Center offers mediation services by trained volunteers in Macomb, St. Clair, Sanilac, Huron, Lapeer and Tuscola counties.
The center also works with schools to provide peer mediation training and dispute resolution.
Currently, the center is partnering with six schools in Macomb County.
Pappas said the center opened more than 2,000 cases last year, and over half of that number were facilitated at participating schools.
He said the total was the highest number of mediations in a given year since the center’s opened its doors.
Tuesday’s event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will be held at MJR Marketplace Digital Cinema 20, 35400 Van Dyke, Sterling Heights.
Tickets for the event include hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine and the choice of any movie shown from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. In addition, MJR provides complimentary popcorn and soft drinks.
Tickets are $60 per person or five for the price of four.
