The 12th Annual State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section Summit will take place Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, at the MotorCity Casino & Hotel in Detroit.
The event is a gathering that will feature a host of practical skills sessions, basic law overviews, and plenty of networking.
A highlight of the event will be presentation of the 2019 Regeana Myrick Outstanding Young Lawyer Award.

Village approves smoking ban covering beaches, parks
ELK RAPIDS (AP) — A northern Michigan village has decided to ban smoking at its parks, beaches and trails following complaints about discarded cigarette butts.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports the Elk Rapids Village Council voted Monday to approve the ban.
The ban includes smoking of any tobacco product or other plant, such as marijuana, whether smoked using cigarettes, cigars, pipes, bongs, vaporizers or electronic cigarettes. Prohibited areas would include all village-owned buildings, plus parks, beaches, public access sites, fishing piers, trails and pathways.
Plans calls for self-policing of the ordinance, though a violation could draw a civil infraction.
Village Clerk Caroline Kennedy said the idea is to protect air quality for parkgoers and beachgoers, while also minimizing litter in public places from smoking.
Police arrest bartender who served man prior to attack in Texas
PLANO, Texas (AP) — Authorities in suburban Dallas have arrested a bartender who served drinks to a man who later went to his estranged wife’s home and fatally shot her and seven others as they gathered to watch the Dallas Cowboys play.
Lindsey Glass was arrested recently and charged with a misdemeanor violation of “sale to certain persons.” The law prohibits the sale of alcohol to a “habitual drunkard or an intoxicated or insane person.”
Authorities say 32-year-old Spencer Hight in September 2017 already showed signs of intoxication at the Plano bar before leaving for the home of Meredith Hight and opening fire.
Spencer Hight was shot and killed by responding officers.
Glass had tried to persuade Hight not to drive and her attorney, Scott Palmer, said her arrest “is not in the interest of justice.”
Kentucky Derby winner poop on sale for $200
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) — Are you interested in a $200 jar of poop from 1997 Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm?
If so, the jars by Kentucky for Kentucky went on sale May 1. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports artist Coleman Larkin is the mastermind behind the expensive crap.
Sales from the “Derby Turds” will go toward Old Friends Farm in Georgetown, a thoroughbred retirement facility Silver Charm calls home. The newspaper says supply of the resin-coated feces is limited.
Larkin says the most difficult part of the creative project is asking “the type of people that own million-dollar thoroughbreds if I can please have some horse turds to put in jars.”
