Whitmer hopes to start reopening sectors of economy on May 1

LANSING (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says she hopes to begin reopening parts of Michigan's economy on May 1.

With her comments Friday, Whitmer did not specifically identify which businesses may be allowed to open but said relaxing stay-home restrictions will come in phases.

Her stay-at-home order, among the nation's toughest in a state hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic, is scheduled to expire on April 30.

“I am hopeful that come May 1, we will make some steps forward,” she said during a tele-town hall hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber.

She said she will elaborate further on her plans during multiple news conferences this week.

Annual cherry festival in Traverse City canceled for 2020

TRAVERSE CITY. (AP) — The National Cherry Festival, a major northern Michigan summer destination for decades, has been canceled for 2020 due to uncertainty over the coronavirus, according to organizers.

The festival in Traverse City was scheduled for July 3-10. The event coincides with Independence Day and is a major tourist draw. It has parades, fireworks, concerts, farm tours, a carnival midway and cherry pie-eating contests.

Area hotels are packed. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels put on an air show.

“The safety and health of our entire community, guests, volunteers and staff is our first priority and always top of mind when making our decisions. ... With the uncertainty of the times, we are unable to be fully confident in the fact that it will be safe to gather and celebrate the first week of July 2020,” organizers said in a written statement.

The festival celebrates the region’s signature fruit. Traverse City calls itself the cherry capital of the world and the region grows most of the nation’s tart cherries, the variety used in pies.

Police: Woman crashes news van with reporter still inside

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta police say a woman who wrecked her car later stole the van of a TV news crew that came to cover the crash, ignoring the screams of a reporter who was still inside, and then wrecked that vehicle as well.

The WGCL-TV van was near the scene of the initial crash last week involving Seniqua Lunsford, 38, news outlets reported.

Police had arrived to investigate the crash when Lunsford got behind the wheel of the news van and drove off, Atlanta police spokesman Steve Avery said.

The station’s photographer had gotten out of the van, but reporter Iyani Hughes was still in the back, editing video. Avery said she yelled for help and tried to get the
woman to stop, but she refused, so the reporter put on her seat belt. The van crashed about a mile from the first crash scene.

Hughes wasn’t hurt. Lunsford was taken to a hospital with an arm injury. Both women are pregnant, Avery said.

Police said they planned to charge Lunsford with kidnapping.
