Jean Cloud was sworn in Wednesday as interim Macomb County prosecutor, filling a vacancy created by the resignation in late March of Eric Smith after he was charged in a corruption investigation. Circuit court judges approved Cloud’s appointment on a 14-1 vote during an on-line meeting Wednesday.

Cloud, who had been serving as acting prosecutor and is the county’s chief trial lawyer, is pictured receiving the oath of office from Macomb County Chief Circuit Court Judge James M. Biernat Jr. following the vote.

“Jean has worked very hard in the last month to guide the prosecutor’s office through a very significant transition,” Biernet said. Cloud, who has been with the prosecutor’s office nearly 20 years, will serve as prosecutor until the November election. She is not among the seven candidates who have filed to run for the four-year term.
