LANSING (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Wednesday she will make an announcement “very soon” on the reopening of gyms and clarifying the standing of high school and other youth sports, noting that she is aware many are anxious about their status amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The governor has kept fitness centers, movie theaters, bowling alleys, ice skating rinks and similar businesses closed since March, except in much of northern
Michigan, where they were allowed to reopen in June.
She said she wants to “get the protocols correct” and “I think we've got an idea of what that looks like.”
Frustrated business owners have noted that their counterparts are now open in all but a few states, while Whitmer has contended that her approach has contributed to Michigan being in strong position with COVID-19 relative to the rest of the U.S. after being one of the hardest-hit states early in the pandemic.
Over the past two weeks, the state’s 104.2 new cases per 100,000 people ranks 15th-lowest, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Also Wednesday, a federal appeals court declined to block a requirement that Michigan’s agricultural and migrant farm workers get tested for the coronavirus, rejecting claims that it violates the rights of Hispanics. A district judge had previously denied a preliminary injunction sought by some farms and workers.
