Peters to hold discussion on pet coke piles on river
DETROIT (AP) — A round table discussion is scheduled in Detroit on raising awareness of petroleum coke piled and stored along the Detroit River.
U.S. Rep. Gary Peters is expected to discuss his plans during Tuesday morning's meeting at the Green Dot Stables restaurant on how to ensure that such storage minimizes risk of dust and water contamination.
The Bloomfield Township Democrat has introduced legislation calling for a federal study of health and environmental effects of open air storage of the material, known as pet coke.
The black, rock-like substance is produced by the petroleum industry. It's used as a fuel worldwide.

Traverse City
Police renew requests for help finding driver in death
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Traverse City police are renewing requests for help from the public after a bicyclist was struck and killed last month by a hit-and-run driver.
Traverse City Police Chief Mike Warren said Monday that "somebody knows something" about the death of Kelly Ann Boyce. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports investigators have received more than 540 tips in the case, and there's a $50,000 reward.
The 29-year-old, who worked in the area, was hit about 2 a.m. on July 5 and dragged for blocks.

Memorial service planned for men missing in Canada
BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) — A private memorial service is planned Friday for two Michigan men missing since they went to Canada for a fishing trip last month.
The Detroit Free Press reports 70-year-old Earl Zellen and his 40-year-old son Matt left July 21 and were reported missing on a lake in Nunavut after they failed to show up July 29 for a charter aircraft flight. Police on Aug. 1 called off the search for the men.
Their boat and fishing gear were spotted, and the boat had run out of gas. Two Canadian Air Force C-130 Hercules helped searched the Dubawnt Lake area last month.

Kettering University set to upgrade campus security
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Kettering University in Flint has upgraded security on its campus, including adding more video cameras and other measures.
An event to unveil the new security center is this week.
Among the $330,000 upgrades, The Flint Journal reports there now are 90 security cameras across campus. That's up from 16.
Lear Corp., which makes automotive seats, donated $125,000 to help pay for technology and equipment upgrades and installation.

Authorities: Man dies after off-road vehicle turned over
ARCADIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 52-year-old man is dead after the off-road vehicle he was riding overturned in Lapeer County.
MLive.com reports Michael Pitt was found dead Monday at his property in Arcadia Township, about 50 miles north of Detroit.
The sheriff's department says Pitt had been operating the 4-wheeler Sunday. His body was found near the vehicle after it rolled.
The death is under investigation.

Airport wedding plan clears final government hurdles
BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) — A couple's months-long effort to hold their wedding at Bay City's James Clements Airport has cleared a final hurdle.
Twenty-nine-year-old Karen Engle and 30-year-old Kevin Holcomb decided they wanted to hold the ceremony at the airport and discovered that getting the needed approvals was a challenging effort.
Bay City is charging the couple $942 for airport-related expenses, including use of the facility and security.
