The American Bar Association Antitrust Law Section will convene an Antitrust Masters Course for attorneys this week in Philadelphia with an array of programs including “the view” sessions from high-ranking officials of both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
The 2022 Antitrust Masters Course will take place Thursday through Saturday, October 20-22 at the Notary Hotel in Philadelphia.
The course is intended to boost the skills of young attorneys as well as provide enhanced training for more seasoned practitioners. Sessions will explore timely and important antitrust developments and offer practice tools that are used by some of the most experienced antitrust attorneys. In the four plenary sessions particularly, some of the nation’s top academics and experts will offer their expertise and insight.
The “View From the FTC” brings together attorneys from the agency to discuss key trends and issues related to the FTC’s recent enforcement decisions, including health care mergers, pay for delay, technology and other recent conduct litigation and consent decrees. Scheduled FTC speakers are Patricia A. Brink, deputy director, Bureau of Competition; Maria Coppola, counsel, International Antitrust; and Mark Seidman, assistant director, Mergers IV Division. The panel will be Thursday, from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m.
The “View From the Department of Justice” will explore key trends and issues related to DOJ’s recent criminal, merger and civil nonmerger enforcement initiatives. The panel will also address some of the division’s litigation initiatives and policy changes. Scheduled panelists are Ryan J. Danks, director of civil enforcement; Marvin Price, director of Criminal Enforcement; and Eyitayo St. Matthew-Daniel, assistant chief in the New York office. The discussion will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
A third program, “Merger Review Beyond the DOJ/FTC: The Global Dimension,” will look beyond U.S. regulatory developments and explore multi-jurisdictional merger review in a global economy. The program will be Friday from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m., and feature three experienced attorneys.
Michael Hausfeld, chair emeritus of Hausfeld LLP, will deliver keynote remarks Friday at 12:30 p.m. Widely recognized for his leadership on competition matters and his groundbreaking cases in human rights law, Hausfeld has secured some of the largest and most successful class actions in the fields of human rights, discrimination and antitrust law. Last spring, he received the section’s special Lifetime Achievement Award.
Three additional speakers are also highlighted in the programming. Zephyr Teachout, senior counsel, Economic Justice, Office of the New York Attorney General, will speak at the conference dinner on Thursday night. Scholar Herbert Hovenkamp of the University of Pennsylvania Law School will speak Friday night. U.S. District Court Judge Amit P. Mehta of the District of Columbia speaks Saturday from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
