Annual Ambulance Chase 5K to raise funds Oct. 17

Wayne State University Law School will conduct its 41st Ambulance Chase 5K on Saturday, October 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on campus, 471 West Palmer Ave. in Detroit.

The Ambulance Chase is a long-standing Wayne Law tradition—a 5K walk/run through the Wayne State campus that brings together students, faculty, alumni, and the broader legal community.

This year’s race will benefit the Innocence Project, a nonprofit legal organization advocating policy changes for criminal justice reform and freeing wrongfully convicted individuals through DNA testing.  Since its founding in 1992, the Innocence Project has helped exonerate hundreds of innocent people and reshape the American justice system.

Ambulance Chase participants will receive this year’s 2026 5K T-shirt. Trophies will be given to the top three race finishers. 

Early bird registration is $25 per person or $65 per three-person relay team. General registration is $30 per person or $75 per three-person relay team. Law school presents ‘Stories of Wrongful Conviction and Exoneration’

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law’s Conviction Integrity Clinic will present “Injustice Revealed: Stories of Wrongful Conviction and Exoneration,” a candid discussion on wrongful convictions, on Wednesday, October 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Room 226 at Detroit Mercy Law, 651 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King will discuss his book, “Bone Valley: A True Story of Injustice and Redemption in the Heart of Florida.”  Michigan exonerees will also share their personal experiences with wrongful conviction, incarceration and exoneration. Together, the panel will explore the human cost of injustice and the critical role that lawyers and communities play in advancing justice. A reception will follow in the atrium. 

Presented as part of the University of Detroit Mercy’s 150th anniversary celebration, this discussion reflects the university’s commitment to service, justice and community engagement while highlighting how persistence in the pursuit of truth can help bring wrongful convictions to light.
