For the last 15 years, solo attorney Leslie Butler has been handling residential, commercial, and multi-family residential real property transactions, business formation, governance, representation and succession planning, contract drafting as well as estate planning.
Before becoming a Wayne Law alumna, Butler was, among a host of other careers, a wedding gown designer and pastry chef.
Now she is also a published author, who has published the first of three children’s picture books, “A Fine Loaf of Bread,” with her co-author and husband, Terry Butler.
Terry Butler, with a B.F.A. in graphic design from the University of Michigan, has been an elementary school art teacher, print-maker, orchardist, and head baker. He created the handmade linocut print illustrations for the book.
“A Fine Loaf of Bread” was published by Fifth Avenue Press, founded by the Ann Arbor District Library to support local writers.
The first story — with its origins in the years the Ann Arbor residents spent working in an organic sourdough bakery in northern Michigan — is about a man named Robert, living a quiet life on the edge of town, whose trip to pick up a loaf of bread becomes a challenge. Once his ordeal is over, he discovers the best way to enjoy his feast.
More than two decades ago, Terry wrote a rhyming tale about the main character Robert, named for Robert L. Pisor, the bakery owner for whom they both worked, and to whom the book is dedicated.
This story sat hidden until COVID-19 sent Terry decluttering and organizing.
He uncovered the story and started drawing “mockups” for the illustrations.
Leslie offered writing, styling, and editing assistance while Terry began work on the illustrations. They continued to collaborate until they finally submitted it to 5th Avenue Press.
The book was published in February 2023.

Terry’s unique, ethereal, comical and thought-provoking art can also be found on the site where they are “Purveyors of Mysteries and Memories.”
“A Fine Loaf of Bread” is also available online from many book outlets.
The pair have two more children’s picture books in the pipeline, “Charlie Plays the Fiddle” and “Doogal’s Blanket.
