Wayne State University Law School’s Black Law Student Association (BLSA) recently hosted its annual “Be The Change” event, welcoming middle school students from David Ellis Academy’s Detroit and West locations. Founded by Wayne Law alumna, Alexis Scott-Smith, “Be The Change” aims to connect underserved youth with the legal community and inspire them to pursue careers in law.

The event provided students with a range of experiences designed to spark interest and build skills for future legal professionals. Participants toured the law school, engaged in discussions with practicing attorneys during lunch, and took part in a debate workshop led by Jerjuan Howard, Director of the Umoja Debate League.

One of the highlights of the event was the live debate, where students tackled pressing issues facing society today. Topics included whether TikTok should implement age restrictions and whether the education system should adopt year-round schooling. The debates not only challenged students’ critical thinking abilities but also provided them with valuable feedback from law students.

Winning teams were awarded medals, but all participants received certificates of participation and thank-you bags as tokens of appreciation. The success of the event was made possible through sponsorships from several Detroit law firms, including Wayne State University Law School, Lewis & Munday PC, Bodman PLC, Warner Norcross + Judd, Dickinson Wright, Plunkett Cooney, and Dykema.

The success of this year’s event was largely due to the efforts of the student-driven Executive Board. Led by President Anaria Rambus and Vice President LaZaurea Williams, the board also included Treasurer Nana Berka, Secretary Kennedy Smith, and Professional Development Chair Jamison Harris. Additionally, first-year representatives CeCe Huddleston, Serenity Poole, and Cierra Smith played vital roles in organizing and executing the event.

As the event concluded, BLSA left students with a powerful message: “May You Be Proud Of The Work You Do, The Person You Are, And The Difference You Make.” Through initiatives like “Be The Change,” Wayne Law’s BLSA continues to make a positive impact on the future of Detroit’s legal community.
