SBM Young Lawyers Section to host ZooLAWgical event



The Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Michigan will host ZooLAWgical on Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.

The day will feature a unique blend of adventure and education as participants explore the intersection of law and wildlife. Attendees can enjoy the zoo’s exhibits, while also diving deep into Law Learning Sessions, on topics ranging from Zoo Law to Companion Animals and even Wacky Animal Law at their leisure throughout the day.

Writing for social workers, mitigation specialists topic of virtual lunchtime


The State Appellate Defender Office’s Criminal Defense Resource Center will continue its 2024 virtual lunchtime training with “Story Telling and Report Writing for Social Workers & Mitigation Specialists” on Friday, July 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Leading the training will be  Lori James-Townes, the executive director of the National Association of Public Defense. She assumed this leadership position after three years of working as assistant training director for NAPD and more than 25 years of working on defense teams representing indigent defendants.

James-Townes has more than 25 years of clinical practice, leadership, and management experience. At NAPD, she led the creation and planning of NAPD’s Women’s Conference. In 2021, she co-led NAPD’s first-ever National Virtual Conference for Gideon Week – bringing more than 6,500 attendees together for the largest public defense training in history.

Catholic Lawyers Society to host summer outing


The Catholic Lawyers Society of Metropolitan Detroit will host a Summer Outing at Jimmy John’s Field on Friday, August 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at Jimmy John’s Field, 7171 Auburn Rd. in Utica.

Food will be served starting when the gates open for 90 minutes. The menu will feature hot dogs, slow roasted BBQ pulled chicken, pasta salad, coleslaw, baked beans, potato chips, and cookies.  Each guest will receive unlimited soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea, and water.
