G-A moves over .500 mark
with 17-14 win over Allegan

By Dale Martin

Galesburg-Augusta traveled to Allegan last Friday and came away with a hard fought 17-14 win.

The win gives G-A a 2-1 record, marking the first time a G-A team has been over .500 after three games since 2016 when that team started 2-0.

The Rams’ first score came in the first quarter and was set up when Jonah Ranes recovered a Tiger fumble at the Allegan 46-yard line. It took just 6 plays for the Rams to score with Nolan Brewer hitting pay dirt on a 10-yard run. Owen Pfeiffer added the point after kick for an early 7-0 lead.

Allegan returned the favor with a 7 play, 79-yard  drive to tie the score. After Brysten Eicher-McColl raced the final 51 yards for the touchdown and Myles Jackson kicked the extra point, the teams finished the quarter in a tie.

The second quarter was a bit sloppy as the Rams were intercepted, the Tigers fumbled the ball back to the Rams who returned the favor by fumbling back to the Tigers. G-A finally got the offense going, moving the ball 57 yards on 10 plays to take the lead. Key plays in the drive were a fourth down 8-yard Brewer  to Jeremiah Mann pass for a first down, a Brewer to Jonah Ranes pass covering 13 yards and a 16-yard completion from Brewer to Ethan Thomas for the touchdown. Pfeiffer’s point after kick gave G-A a 14-7 halftime lead.

G-A opened the second half with a 14 play, 65-yard drive that stalled at the Allegan 11-yard line. Pfeiffer split the uprights with a 27-yard field goal that increased the Rams lead to 17-7 with 6 minutes to play in the third quarter.

Allegan wasted little time in responding. On the first play of their possession Eicher-McColl raced 55 yards to the Ram 31-yard line. The Tigers culminated their 86-yard drive with Jeremiah Edwards-Tate covering the final 6 yards and Jackson converting the point after kick, cutting G-A’s lead to 17-14 with 3 minutes to play in the third quarter.

G-A consumed a large portion of the fourth quarter with an eight play drive that started from its own 23-yard line. A 19-yard completion to Thomas, a 19-yard run by Levi Born and a 16-yard scamper by CJ Denard carried  the Rams to the Tiger 5-yard line. The drive stalled on the Allegan 1-yard line, giving the ball back to the Tigers with about 4 minutes to play.

A 31-yard run by Edwards-Tate made things a little uneasy for the Ram faithful but the defense held and a fourth down pass play was broken up by the secondary and the Rams had their second straight win of the young season.

G-A had a balanced rushing attack with Ranes picking up 79 yards. Born, Brewer and Denard pitched in with 44, 36 and 31 yards respectfully.

Nolan Brewer completed 8 passes for 109 yards. Ranes picked up 36 yards on 3 catches, Thomas counted 35 yards on 2 catches and Born caught 1 pass for 18 yards.

The defense held the Tigers without a pass completion but gave up 284 yards rushing. They did however come up with the big plays when needed to seal the victory.

Brewer led the defense with 9 tackles. Ranes made 8 tackles and recovered a fumble. Dominic Corsi collected 8 tackles, the last one forced the Tigers to attempt the pass that fell incomplete and ended the game. Born and Bradley Hubbard each made 6 tackles and CJ Denard had 5 and a fumble recovery.

The Rams return home and will host the Eagles of Schoolcraft on September 20 at 7 p.m.

After winning the first game and enjoying a small lead late in the bracket finals, the Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team was unable to advance to the championship match of  Panther Invitational at Climax-Scotts September 14.
