Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller announced Monday that Undersheriff Jim VanDyken will be retiring at the end of 2024.
Undersheriff VanDyken has been Kalamazoo County Undersheriff since 2016 and has served the County of Kalamazoo at the Sheriff’s Office since 1992.
“With over 32 years of dedicated service, we are grateful and appreciative of his commitment to Kalamazoo’s citizens and the Sheriff’s Office,” said Fuller in a news release.
Fuller said Undersheriff VanDyken has requested to return to his original command union, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Supervisors Association, prior to retirement. Fuller adds the KCSSA and he have approved the request.
According to the release, on September 28, 2024, Undersheriff VanDyken will transfer at his own request back to his original command unit and serve as chief deputy until his final retirement date. The Sheriff’s Department will provide additional information on VanDyken’s retirement plans or celebrations in the upcoming months.
On September 28, current Chief Deputy Michelle Greenlee agreed at Fuller’s request to transfer into the Undersheriff position. Chief Deputy Greenlee has served the County of Kalamazoo through the Sheriff’s Office for over 23 years.
Greenlee started her career at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department as an intern in 1999 and has held several specialty positions and every rank within the Sheriff’s Office. She has served in all three agency divisions: Jail, Operations, and Support, and has held command positions since 2013.
Greenlee has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration, both from Western Michigan University. She graduated from the School of Police Staff and Command in 2015 at Northwestern University Center for Public Safety and graduated from the FBI National Academy class 279 in March, 2020. “Chief Deputy Greenlee and I are excited for her to begin her position as Undersheriff at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Kalamazoo,” adds Fuller in the news release.
