Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Galesburg Shell Gas Station at 10305 Miller Drive in Comstock Township December 22 at approximately 2:52 a.m. for a report that an employee had been assaulted with a tire iron, however the suspect was caught later that night intoxicated in Calhoun County.
Upon investigation, deputies found that the armed suspect entered the store and assaulted an employee with the tire iron. The suspect then took several items from behind the counter and fled the scene in a vehicle. The 69-year-old victim was transported, by LIFE EMS, to a local hospital to receive treatment for what the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department listed as serious injuries.
A description of the suspect, and his vehicle, was promptly broadcasted to surrounding counties.
The suspect was apprehended a short time later in Calhoun County.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday, December 22, Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies responded to a motorist assist call on Interstate 69 near the Interstate 94 interchange in Marshall Township. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a 37-year-old man from Saint Clair Shores, who was intoxicated and uncooperative. The man became aggressive, physically attacking multiple citizens who had stopped to offer assistance, causing non-life-threatening injuries.
During the investigation, deputies learned that the suspect had just committed an armed robbery in Galesburg. As deputies attempted to apprehend the individual, he resisted arrest and subsequently assaulted hospital staff while receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained prior to law enforcement contact.
Further investigation revealed stolen property and the weapon used in the robbery in the suspect’s vehicle.
A member of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the apprehension scene and seized the involved weapon, and the stolen property, that was located inside of the suspect’s vehicle.
The suspect was ledged at the Calhoun County jail on multiple felony charges and arrangements were made for the suspect to be turned over to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office once the process was finished in Calhoun County.
The Marshall Police Department assisted the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation and arrest.
