Bloomfield Hills attorney promotes value of Divorce With Respect Week

It’s been slow-going promoting the idea that divorce does not have to be filled with anguish and acrimony, but divorce attorney Alisa Peskin-Shepherd is determined to let Michiganders know there is another way to end a marriage.

A long-time collaboratively-trained divorce attorney who is an active member of the international group, the International Academy of Collaborative Practitioners, as well as a member of the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan (CPIM), Peskin-Shepherd encourages her Michigan colleagues to participate in Divorce With Respect Week this year, March 3-9.

In so doing, members of CPIM, including Peskin-Shepherd, will offer free 30-minute divorce consultations during that week as part of a nationwide effort to promote alternative options to court-based litigative divorce.

“I’ve practiced family law for more than three decades and discovering Collaborative Divorce was one of the best things to happen to my career and divorce in general,” says Peskin-Shepherd, whose law firm, Transitions Legal, is known for “out-of-the-box” approaches to guiding clients through all aspects of family law.

“I’m so glad my colleagues at the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan agreed that it was time to bring our state and our industry into Divorce With Respect Week. Most people think of divorce as a disgrace and an ugly time for a couple or a family. It doesn’t have to be, and that’s what we want people to know.”

Divorce With Respect Week was started in 2021 by Collaborative Practice California (CPCAL). The Divorce With Respect Week initiative has since grown into a national effort to educate people about the benefits of Collaborative Divorce. With more than 30 years of experience as a family law, divorce, and custody attorney, Peskin-Shepherd founded Transitions Legal, a Bloomfield Hills-based family law firm, in 2013. She brings a unique approach to legal practice, doing what is best for all involved—and working toward optimal outcomes for divorcing couples.

Recognized as a Super Lawyer every year since 2015, and DBusiness Magazine Top Lawyer many times since 2011, Peskin-Shepherd has been named a Leader in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly, known for excellence in legal practice and one of the top female lawyers in Michigan. An approved Mediator and Collaborative Divorce practitioner, she has special training in domestic violence through the State Bar of Michigan Open Justice Commission.
