ALA?conducts ‘Book Swap’ in Birmingham today


The Association of Legal Administrators, Metropolitan Detroit Chapter, will host its first ever “Book Swap” event on Wednesday, May 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Griffin Claw Brewery, 575 S. Eton St. in Birmingham.

All are welcome to bring a book (nothing related to the legal field) and a friend. Books can be new or used—just something attendees are excited to share with others.  Appetizers will be provided, and each attendee will receive a bookmark created from a local artist.

There is not cost to attend but registration is requested to reserve enough space.  To register, visit https://aladetroit.org.

Associations co-host Book Club for AAPI month May 28


In commemoration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (WLAM) and the Michigan Asian Pacific Bar Association (MAPABA) will host a Book Club online Wednesday, May 28, beginning at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

The Book Club will discuss the memoir “Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant” by Curtis Chin. The memoir tells the story of Chin’s time growing up as a gay Chinese American kid in 1980s Detroit.

Special guest Roland Hwang, professor of Asian Pacific American history in the Department of American Culture, A/PIA Studies at the University of Michigan, will be providing remarks.

Bar association to host Annual Dinner at Westin Book Cadillac June 5


The Eastern District of Michigan Bar Association will host its Annual Dinner on Thursday, June 5, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Westin Book Cadillac, 1114 Washington Blvd. in Detroit
The Annual Dinner will feature the presentation of the 2025 Julian Abele Cook Jr. - Bernard A. Friedman Civility Award, recognition and thank yous to the members of the federal bench, election of chapter officers, and social time with friends and colleagues.

Cost is $75 for members, $105 for non-members/guests, $55 for member current federal law clerks, and $75 for non-member current federal law clerks.
