Both endorsed Democratic candidates for attorney general and secretary of state are sitting pretty on a pile of cash on hand compared to their Republican counterparts ahead of the state convention, each safeguarding around $1 million, which is more than double the total of their opponents.
Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit raised $1.28 million ahead of Aug. 13 this year in his attorney general campaign. He spent $439,605 during the period and has $1.02 million cash on hand ahead of November.
Alongside a lot of labor endorsements from the UAW and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and the Democratic Attorneys General Association, Savit also received large donations from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan with $30,000, Pursuit of Justice PAC for crime reform with $14,721, and $5,000 from both Jonathan and Jennifer Soros, family members of George Soros, who has been lambasted by Republicans for putting lots of money into Democratic politics.
The Savit campaign celebrated their fundraising efforts in a statement and criticized his opponent Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd for sparking campaign finance complaints by not submitting full reports last week.
Lloyd raised significantly less with $377,611 raised and $225,289 on hand following drama in his filing that first reported he only raised $26,336 for the year with no contributions since February. The campaign said the reporting flaws were due to miscommunication on the due date of the reports with the Bureau of Elections.
“This campaign is by and for the people,” Savit said in a statement following his filing. “From Marquette to Monroe, I’ve felt the excitement on the ground while traveling the state these past few months. The people of Michigan deserve an Attorney General who is fully transparent, follows the law, and answers to the people, not corporations. I’m proud to make and honor those commitments, as any candidate for AG should be.”
Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist raised $1.7 million for his secretary of state campaign throughout the year and spent $727,600. Gilchrist has around $1.03 million in cash on hand ahead of the general election.
Some of the large contributors this year include the UAW Political Action Committee and Democratic Association of Secretaries of State with $83,250. Other major contributors included labor fundraising sources include the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the MEA PAC.
Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini in comparison reported raising $322,651 through Aug. 6. He spent $161,877 and has $296,103 on hand.
The major funding gap only makes the challenges more insurmountable for down ballot Republicans like Forlini and Lloyd who will already face a tough environment for Republicans amid criticism of President Donald Trump’s administration on high prices and the war in Iran.
