National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan event examines recent cases before U.S. Supreme Court

National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan (NCJW|MI) will provide a review of the most important cases that have faced the US Supreme Court in the past year at its annual Fall Focus program. U.S. Supreme Court 101 will be held on Wed. Oct. 14 at Adat Shalom Synagogue (29901 Middlebelt Road, Farmington Hills, MI  48334) and will feature attorney Kelly Cruz J.D., Associate General Counsel at the University of Michigan. Cruz will provide a high-level overview of the role of the U.S. Supreme Court, the appointment process, and a review of some of the most consequential and controversial cases from the previous year. Cruz said that many people did not understand in detail how the Supreme Court operates. “It is the highest tribunal in the nation and it has a superpower. It may affirm or invalidate the actions of other branches of the government, which is fundamental for appropriate checks and balances,” she said.

Every year, 7,000-8,000 cases are petitioned for consideration by the Supreme Court and of those, somewhere between 50-100 are reviewed. The important cases that Cruz will review from the past year include birthright citizenship, medical abortion, transgender athletes, mail-in ballots, tariffs and gun control. “The cases that the Supreme Court hears often have significant political, societal and judicial impact by design,” said Cruz. “For example, the tariffs have widespread economic impact on small and large businesses and mail-in ballots can affect how you vote.”

Lynn Lieberman, NCJW Co-State Policy Advocate, Michigan, explained why the event was being held. “We want to increase awareness and understanding of the U.S. Supreme Court, to review consequential cases the Court decided during the 2025-2026 term, and to identify the role U.S. Senators play in the appointment process,” she said. “It is important to have an informed electorate that understands the role of the Supreme Court, since its decisions impact almost every aspect of our lives.”

NCJW|MI is an organization at the forefront of voter advocacy, women’s reproductive rights and gun safety, holding programs and educational initiatives, such as Fall Focus, to promote social justice issues. The 135-year-old organization also supports the community with many volunteer projects, such as the annual Back 2 School Store, which provides free clothing and school supplies to 700 Detroit children in need, the Backpack project which provides backpacks and school supplies to more than 1,000 homeless and low-income students in Oakland County, literacy outreach, fleece blankets for hospitalized children, and Kosher Meals on Wheels.

Tickets for Fall Focus are $25; students are free with a student ID. Pre-registration for the program is mandatory; no walk-ins. To register for the program call 248.355.3300 ext. 0 or go to ncjwmi.org.
