Annual Ambulance Chase 5K supports Innocence Project

On Saturday, October 17, Wayne State University Law School’s Student Board of Governors (SBG) hosted the 41st Annual Ambulance Chase 5K, one of the law school’s longest-running student traditions. Despite a windy fall morning, 48 participants and 11 volunteers came out to run, walk, and cheer for a good cause.

Planning for this year’s race began in June, and the SBG 5K Committee chose to support a nationally recognized organization: the Innocence Project, which works to free wrongfully convicted people and reform the criminal legal system. SBG is projected to donate more than $5,000 to the organization.

Community member Carlos Guitron-Ortiz, who joined the race from outside the Wayne State community, took first place with a time of 19:07. Wayne Law students Patrick Diehl and Joseph Harrell rounded out the top three, finishing at 20:14 and 21:16.

The race also saw strong support from the legal community, with several sponsors taking on bundled packages this year. Thanks go out to Premier Sponsor JD Advising; Trophy & Award and Check-In Sponsor The Sam Bernstein Law Firm; Food & Beverage and Cheer Tent Sponsor Giarmarco Mullins & Horton; and all of our T-shirt and Advocate sponsors, including Maddin Hauser, Brooks Kushman, Detroit Bar Association, AccessLex Institute, Barbri, Themis Bar Review, and Kitab Cafe.
