Veterans treatment court seminar scheduled

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Mark Switalski and 41B District Court Judge Carrie Fuca are among the speakers scheduled for a seminar Tuesday, April 29 in Detroit on Veterans Treatment Courts.

The event, sponsored by the  Federal Bar Association Federal Disability Benefits Committee, will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. in Room 115  at the U.S. Court Building, 231 W. Lafayette Blvd, Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs) have been created to provide assistance to military veterans who have honorably served in U.S. armed forces.

The courts use a team approach to help veterans who have become involved in the criminal justice system.

Officials say VTCs attempt to get beyond the legal problems to address the underlying physical, psychological and substance abuse issues that may have resulted in criminal conduct.

Successful completion of the program may result in a reduced plea or reduction in sentence.

Organizers said speakers such as Switalski and Fuca were selected because they have been involved in establishing and implementing such courts.

Other speakers include Gail Pamukov-Miller, immediate past president of the Macomb County Bar Association; Nanette Colling and Tracy Galliday-Champagne, Veterans Justice Outreach Coordinators from the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Warren attorney John E Walus.

The seminar was designed to provide a “lessons learned” approach to the establishment and operation of VTCs.

Other topics to be covered include the current and projected VA perspective, the evolving role of the defense attorney and the mentor program.

Additional courts are being established throughout the state, according to FBA officials, and the seminar is an opportunity to become informed regarding this invaluable tool used to assist our Veterans.

This is a “no cost” seminar. Please RSVP to John E. Walus at jewalus@aol.com or 248-357-7013.
