Area lawyers volunteer for legal aid clinic
On Saturday, June 8, a free legal aid clinic rolls out the red carpet on this year’s edition of the annual pro bono outdoor event in Birmingham.
Law Day 2019 is celebrating 32 consecutive years. It is scheduled rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goodwin & Scieszka Law Center at 999 Haynes.
Along with legal advice for adults, the event offers carnival fun for the kids, live music, bounce houses and face painting.
In addition, 500 free bike helmets will be given away along with prizes for Detroit Tigers tickets and four new bicycles.

Since 1987, Law Day has donated 5,000 free legal consultations and 10,000 free bike helmets.
Detroit police seek ‘serial murderer’ in deaths of three women
DETROIT (AP) — Police in Detroit say the killings of three women since March could be the work of a "serial murderer and rapist."
Chief James Craig says the homicides appear to be connected. He spoke to reporters after a body was discovered in a vacant house Wednesday, more than two months after the first victim was found.
Two of the three women were in their early 50s. One died of blunt force trauma, while the cause of the other deaths remains under investigation.
Craig says detectives believe the women worked in the sex trade. The chief says he's not trying to "create an alarm across the city." But he's making a public appeal for more information, especially from people who accept money for sex and go into vacant buildings.
Connecticut governor signs gun law changes
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Gov. Ned Lamont has signed three bills into law that attempt to toughen Connecticut's gun laws.
The Democrat signed one bill this week that stems from the death of Ethan Song, a Guilford 15-year-old who accidentally shot himself with a handgun owned by a friend's father. The legislation requires loaded and unloaded firearms to be safely stored in homes where there are minors under age 18.
Lamont has also signed bills requiring handguns left in an unattended vehicle to be stored in a trunk, locked safe or locked glove box and prohibiting unmarked, untraceable weapons known as ghost guns.
All three laws will take effect on Oct. 1.
Lamont has said most residents want state officials to "close the gaping loopholes" that allow guns to get into the "wrong hands."
Police rescue man and puppy trapped in garbage truck
PROVO, Utah (AP) — A puppy and its 43-year-old owner are recovering after getting trapped in a garbage truck.
Provo Police Sgt. Nisha King said officers rescued the man and his puppy after they got caught by the truck's compactor mechanism. The unidentified man and puppy were sleeping in a dumpster when the truck collected and compacted the bin's contents with them still inside.
The driver stopped the machine after hearing the man call for help. He sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital.
King said the pit bull-lab mix puppy was not hurt and was taken to a shelter.
