Center provides Domestic Relations Mediator training

The decision to divorce is often a very long and difficult process; its upheaval affects everyone involved. The Oakland Mediation Center (OMC) is offering the 44-Hour Domestic Relations Mediator Training to those who wish to act as a third party neutral in facilitating the resolution of divorce disputes. This interactive training will take participants through the entire divorce mediation process, from the initial consultation to the memorandum of agreement. The training will cover mediator communication skills, initial consultation, domestic violence screening, establishing a parenting plan, budgeting for the future, addressing tax & legal issues, memorandum of agreement, mediator ethics, and standards of conduct. The training will be held on October 7, 14, 21, 26, and 28, from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. each day. Attendance at all sessions is required to receive a certificate. The cost of the training is $1,195 and includes continental breakfast, lunch, certificate of completion and course materials. This training fulfills the training requirement of MCR 3.216 to be listed on the Circuit Court list of domestic mediators. The training will be conducted by David Bihl and Earlene Baggett-Hayes. Bihl is a mediator and certified trainer with more than 5,000 hours of facilitation experience. He facilitated trainings for representatives of businesses, government, courts across Michigan. He has mediated a variety of cases types including: divorce, parenting time, neighbor, probate, breach of contract, and school. Baggett-Hayes is a mediator, facilitator, arbitrator and attorney. She is a certified trainer in employment matters (including hiring, harassment, discrimination & diversity) and Alternative Dispute Resolution (Mediation and Conflict Resolution training, Peer Mediation and Coaching). Her law practice includes employment, labor, business, construction and contract law. "OMC's mission is to help the community peacefully resolve conflict through mediation and education," said Bonnie Hanes, OMC executive director. "This training gives people skills to help reduce the combative nature of divorce and provides tools to help people make informed decisions for themselves and their families."
