Bullard joins clerks in support of school elections legislation
Oakland County Clerk Bill Bullard (right) and Macomb County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh (left) testified together last Wednesday in a successful committee hearing on SB 427 and HB 4005 that would require all school board elections be held in November.
Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett joined in support in a letter submitted to the committee.
The move to even year November school board elections has already saved Oakland County taxpayers millions of dollars and increased voter participation in school board elections dramatically.
"November school elections save taxpayers' dollars and increase voter participation," said Bullard.
"Oakland County has lead the way in schools voluntarily moving their elections to Novembers. This legislation has the potential to put millions of dollars statewide back into the classrooms. With politics so divisive now, I am grateful that I could join in this bi-partisan effort with Clerks Sabaugh and Garrett."
The Senate Committee on Local Government and Elections, chaired by Sen. Dave Robertson (R-Grand Blanc) reported out the bill to the full Senate with recommendation that it be passed by the full Senate.
SB 427 is sponsored by Sen. Patrick Colbeck (R-Canton). A similar bill, HB 4005, sponsored by Kurt Heise (R-Plymouth) passed the full House this summer and was moved to the Senate floor also.
