City of Pontiac gets rid of parking meters
PONTIAC (AP) -- The city of Pontiac is getting rid of downtown parking meters.
The Oakland Press and The Detroit News report state-appointed emergency financial manager Lou Schimmel recently announced the decision. Schimmel tells the Detroit Free Press that the cost to collect change and maintain meters outstripped revenue.
Meters were being removed and the posts on which they sat will be taken down later.
The meters are being replaced with signs saying two-hour parking is permitted. Parking tickets still are expected to be issued.
In addition to parking meters, the city owns a number of parking lots and the Phoenix Center parking structure. Pontiac plans to put some of the lots up for sale. The city plans to keep the structure and its adjacent 300-space lot but privatize their operation.
