Settlement reached in Monica Conyers' lawsuit

DETROIT (AP) -- A lawyer reports there's a tentative settlement in a civil suit that accuses jailed ex-Detroit Councilwoman Monica Conyers of forcing a nonprofit shelter to fire one of its workers because he wanted to recall her from office. Robert Fetter told The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press on Monday that the deal includes a monetary settlement with ex-Mariners Inn worker Theodis Collins. The settlement has to be approved by the City Council. Collins says he was fired in 2009 from the Mariners Inn because the group feared it could lose city grants because of his activism. A trial in the case was scheduled for Nov. 14 in U.S. District Court in Detroit. Conyers is serving time in federal prison for corruption. She had denied any role in Collins' firing.
